04 XJR - zf6hp26 P0783 fault fixed
Getting on the freeway the other day the car stuttered when shifting to 4th gear and then said transmission fault on the screen. I got right back off the freeway and went back to work to get my scanner. Cleared the code and went to test drive again. This time on the freeway I manually shifted through the gears. When I shifted to 4th the transmission stuttered again and then went into a limp mode. The Transmission would only use 2nd or 3rd gear. So I babied the car home a couple of miles on side streets.
That night I did some investigating. A big thanks to this forum for supplying me with lots of info. The next day I got under the car to check things out. Found that the trans pan was wet with ATF and my shift cable bracket was loose. So I used some Mercon SP I had on hand and did the Trans refill procedure. What a PITA that is. Really Jag, no dipstick? The Transmission took almost 3qts. Then I tightened up the bracket.
So far, the transmission is shifting good again. I even ran it hard through the gears down the freeway. Man these XJRs hit triple digits fast. Now that I think that trans will be ok, I plan to go get a new pan/filter and do a Trans service and probably get the correct fluid. Hopefully that should cure the leak and shifting problem. I think I also need to go to the dealer and have them flash the ECU. I'm not sure if the pan or the drain plug was leaking. I know the drain plug doesn't need much torque, (like 5ft/lbs) but it seemed a little loose. But a new pan/filter should fix all that anyways.
Just wanted to share my experience incase anybody else has similar problems. And I wanted to thank this forum for supplying me with useful info with my new car.
Regards

Did you find out where the fluid was leaking from ? 3 quarts is an awful lot lost.
Also good advice from HhisIII re the sleeve. This seals the wiring loom connection to the transmission. Note that it is the TCM you reflash, not the ECU. The TCM is in the tranny, and accessible for reflash same way as ECU, (via the diagnostic socket).
