Default 100000 Mile Service

I haven't found anything definite about what should be do at this point. I have a '04 XJR with 98000 miles and no maintenance records, so I'd like to give it a major service, just to be sure everything is good.

I'm thinking of these:
Engine, transmission, and differential oils
Coolant, probably a new thermostat as well, since they don't last forever.
Sparkplugs
Supercharger oil
Engine and cabin air filters
Rotate tires
Look ever everything else

Is there anything else I should do? Things that are recommended or "while you're in there"?

Thanks guys!

Looks pretty good but I would add the following:

Power steering & brake fluid
Serpentine Belt
Check the battery
Check brake pads

I will add some more.
1. Supercharger belt
2. O2 sensors - at least the front two, really all four. Use OE quality.
3. Tighten transmission connector.
4. Inspect motor and transmission mounts
5. Clean ground posts behind headlights
6. Lastly and a potential money pit, inspect all the bushings, tie rod ends, and other rubber suspension parts.

A pretty full list of things to do !!

Nobody bothers rotating tyres these days so you don't really need to do this, but much more essential is as Panelhead says in (6) - inspect suspension bushes. These are notorious for not lasting all that long, my description of this being "unfair wear and tear". Particularly short lived are the air spring unit, (or shocks) bottom bushes. One on each shock so these four take the weight of the car. They are not expensive, but labour to swap out means this normally exceeds the parts price.

You probably need the front lower wishbone arms (so-called "banana arm"), trunnion bushes replacing. Certainly if there is any wear on the inners of the front tyres this indicates these bushes are worn out. You could also replace the bushes on the straight arms too, while you're in there.

Rear lower wishbone bushes are also a short-life part. There is a toss-up here between swapping out the whole arm complete, or swapping just the worn-out bushes. There is commonality with a Lincoln on the suspension parts and savings are large if you buy the identical Lincoln part. You can see the mendacity of Ford in whacking Jaguar owners on parts which are the same as in their other up-market brand.

Apart from the air springs, most of the suspension is common with the S-type and the XF and XK cars.

When replacing the transmission fluid, it is prudent to replace the seal where the TCM comms socket plugs in. Early seals leaked after a few miles and contaminated the connection pins causing all sorts of weird things to happen. Later seals were improved.

Panelhead also mentions the earthing points behind the headlamps. These can corrode badly and also cause weird problems in the electronics. Be careful with these, as if they are badly corroded attempts to undo the nuts can cause the stud to just snap off and you then have to replace it. If everything is working as it should, its better to spray these with some anti-rust stuff if they look reasonable. I did this when my car was on 30k miles and have had no trouble. A minor but annoying nuisance item is the bonnet release cable. This rusts-up and the only real cure is to replace it, and when replacing, fully lube the cable from end to end which Jaguar failed to do.

Anyway, enjoy the car !

Additional items of concern:
1. Clean throttle body
2. Clean injectors
3. Replace Power steering fluid
4. Replace brake fluid
5. Replace All rubber hoses
6. Replace fuel filter

Default Also...

10 years or more, 100k or more...

Consider saving up for a set Bilstein B4's.
Consider wheel bearing replacements. Koyo for front, SKF for rear.
Consider Crankcase Vent Valve as part of tune-up.

I just thought of something else. Some months ago one of my fuel tank retaining straps let go due to rusting. The tank then droppped about 1" that side. This was due to somebody at Jaguar trying to save a few pounds by specifying these fairly safety-related items as mild steel with about 2thou of black paint on them. Dirt accumulated at the top of the bowl that holds the tank so it rusted through.

These things are so cheap and quick to replace it would be better done as a preventative measure. Each strap costs about £14. Better that the cost a bit more, like £20-25 and were galvanised before painting.

If you're in a part of the world affected (afflicted) by rust & corrosion you may wish to check a lot of places all over the car, mainly the underside and sides. Obviously, brake pipes are liable to corrode as well as body parts, straps, etc.

I'm not really a fan of any specific mileage service list. Sounds like more of a dealer sponsored money maker. My 2004 with just under 90000 miles has had many of these items done already and some are already normal not 100000 mile items. Such as oil change, cabin filters. My spark plugs were replaced around 50000 by the prior owner. My overflow tank was replaced years back, so the coolant was refreshed but not replaced at that time. I flushed my brakes years back as well. Front shocks have been replaced recently as well. Also a fan of Techron fuel injector cleaner.

Other items on the list are certainly worth looking at but I feel an inspection by a skilled and trusted mechanic is money well spent, rather than just putting them on the list prior to an inspection.
