I had one of my Sepangs repainted. It had already been done at some point because the stainless steel rim had been painted. The wheel shop took the ring off without asking me and it always looked odd after that because there was an obvious gap left between the two wheel halves.
I had already bought a couple of the later wheel to replace warped ones and the gap wasn't there on those so I think the later wheels, without rings, are made slightly differently.

More on 20" Sepangs
Any reason why the chrome/stainless ring can not be refurbished by removing the tire, then grinding, sanding and polishing the damaged areas out without dissembling the wheel? Also, it would seem like the ring could be primed and painted. Are the rings on the Sepang 20" on a 2006 xjr chrome or stainless? Thanks.

SS trim rings really need to be replaced if damaged unless the damage is minor. Just the way the wheels are manufactured. Also, while assembling my Sepangs, I assembled one without the trim ring and the gap really didn't look right, so painting the wheel without the trim rings would be better than with a damaged trim ring, it would not the same as the newer wheels that do not have the trim ring. Curious as to what the non trim ring Sepangs cost. They are rarely available.

Sepang repair
My recently purchased '06 has Sepang 20 inch wheels with curb rash on all wheels. I have been asking for advice on how to refurbish the wheels and received advice which now does not make sense. I just finished one wheel and it is very close to new in appearance. There are three parts to these wheels. 1) the round hub that the tire is placed on. Only hole on the hub is the fitting for the valve stem. The second part includes the 15 spokes which attach to the hub and the final piece, the stainless trim piece which serves two purposes, cosmetic and to protect the aluminium wheel from abrasions. When the tire is removed, I used a fine file and filed all the abrasions smooth, followed by sanding with 320, 400 and 600 grit, then used the black and grey polishing sticks applied to a 4 inch buffing wheel in an electric drill. Results, excellent. There where two very small dents which can not be removed, but over all, a great improvement. The stainless trim piece has nothing to do with maintaining air pressure in the tire. Some have claimed they removed, refinished and replaced the stainless trim and the tire leaks. Not possible. This procedure is working for me.
