I have a 2004 XJR. The headlights will flicker when I have the control in either auto or on. I have taken to a mechanic for help and don't seem to be getting anywhere. What can I do to fix this as my lights have gone off completely while driving at night.

 

Check your turn signal stalk. You can get a full replacement from Rock Auto. It is easy to remove and open up. There are, if I recall correctly, four wires in there. I had similar issues and found one clearly cracked wire and one that was close to failure. I added two small extension pieces and shrunk tubed them and all is well.

I had the same problem on my 2003 XJ6, and a new steering binnacle lighting switch cured it. An inspection of the old switch showed that somebody before I got the car had fiddled with it, probably too mean to replace it. The same basic switch is used on other Jaguar models, so they are not too expensive.
