Default 2004 VDP shifter problem...only Reverse and Neutral - RESOLVED

Hello

Well my VDP is spending the night at the gym parking lot. Initially, I couldn't get the car to crank at all. Battery's healthy, so I was searching for ideas on my phone when I realized that the "R" is lit when the shifter is in the "P" position. I did a quick search and found the "wing nut" to release the shift lock mechanism so that I could move the shifter.

So I put it in "N" position, and the car would fire up just fine. But my problem now is that no matter what position the shifter is in (D, 4, 3, 2 etc.), it stays in Neutral. When I put it in the "P" position, it engages reverse and I can drive it backwards.

Since it would be a major drag to drive the car in reverse all the time, I'm hoping there's a reasonable solution...if you guys have any idea, please advise.

Thanks!!!

The Selector lever communicates the transmission selector lever position to the transmission control module (TCM) using electronic code through the Controlled Area Network (CAN) bus.

The Selector Lever has a harness connector and a cable going to the side of the transmission:

There isn't a whole lot you can get at in the transmission selector mechanism. Testing is limited to pinpoint tests at the connector.

Adjustment is limited to ensuring the cable is correctly attached to the transmission (arrowed in black) and the lock nuts (arrowed in red) haven't slackened off.

The fault should have set an error code and this is the first place to start troubleshooting. However, it will take more than a simple code reader to retrieve transmission fault codes.

The nuts that hold the cable to the transmission body fall off. Look under your car it should be there. Put the nuts back and apply some locktite so it won't happen again.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, it was in fact the bolt, and it was right there below the car. All OK now!

Thanks for posting the resolution.

I've added 'RESOLVED' to your thread title to help anyone searching for the answers to the same problem in future.

Bet you didn't expect to get out of this one at zero cost when you were stuck in the parking lot!
