2004 XJ8 CATS Upgrade Potential?
Greetings all,
I am looking at replacing my current car ('01 BMW M Coupe) with an '04 XJ8. I tried a few cars at the local dealership and got a pretty good impression of what I would be gaining/loosing from the swap. Two of the cars I tried in particular were an '03 XJ8 Sport and an '04 XJ8. The '03 handled wonderfully, and probably due to my current car, it felt more surefooted than the '04. Unfortunately I'm a pretty tall fellow and would need the extra headroom that the new car afford in order to remain a happy owner, so I've ultimately decided to get the newer car.
What, if anything, do you all know about the possibility of upgrading the CATS system on an XJ8 with that from an XJR? Is it possible? Would I have to upgrade the swaybars as well?
Anything I can do to make the ride a little more sporty would help, and I assume that there aren't too many options that don't involve completely replacing the air system currently in the car, which is something I am not currently willing to do unless I have no other option.

Not to 2nd guess your decision , but you should have gotten the XJR if you were looking for a sportier ride.
The '04 XJ is a better handling car than the 03's. Your tire/rim size might be affecting you, you have the 17in wheels??
In my opinion, the XJ is the best handling Jaguar.

I haven't purchased the car yet, I have to unload my 2001 BMW M Coupe first.
I hear what your saying about the XJR, and I absoutely agree, but I have to make an economic decision. The XJR, with it's more mechanically complex engine, uprated brakes and tires, and it's sporting demeanor are going to be more expensive to maintain over the course of 100,000 miles.
The XJ8 is a strategic decision for me to buy an economic large car to haul a growing family, and avoid being in the SUV and minivan crowd. I can transition from the M to an XJ8, but not to an Odyssey or Escalade, that would be too much to ask for a car aficionado.
So, does anyone know if the XJ8 CATS software can be updated with the XJR program?

Mechanically, the XJ-8 is more complex than the XJR since the R lack Variable Valve Timing. I do see your point though about maintanance. Tires and brakes are at least double the price.
I'll double check on the CATS, but I doubt it's just a software upgrade.
