Default 2004 XJ8 engine shutoff while driving

I own a 2004 XJ8 (V.8 4.2L) with 37K miles. Haven't had many problems with the car before but I was driving at about 30 MPH yesterday when suddenly the car just shuts off. The dashboard said ENGINE FAULT, DISC NOT AVAILABLE, AND PARK BRAKE FAULT. I turned the ignition to the off position, then turned it back on immediately. The car started immeadiately with no problems and I continued driving normally. I went to AutoZone to check if I could find any codes that could be found with their hand-held diagnostic reader. It came up with the code P1111 which was generic in their database for multiple cars manufacturers. Can anyone explain what the code P1111 is for Jaguar and was is the fix?

I would get the faults checked by the dealer or other shop, and not AutoZone(lol). Their "scan tool" may be "CAN" compatible, but it doesn't communicate with other control modules on the CAN network as say "IDS/SDD" would. Chances are you have a bad throttle body. But... The faults still need to be checked first.

My 2004 XJ8 (38,000 miles) did the same thing and I fixed it.

Here's what happened. I was going on a day trip on a Sat. and so the day before, I went to the car wash and they also did the under body wash. Saturday evening after the trip I stopped at my friend's house for a while and then headed home. After a short way I got all the symtoms that you did including the Messages. Mine did it several times and along with the P1111 (emissions stuff passed some tests) I got a P0121. A lot of people will run out and pay the bucks for a Throttle Body, but I did this first.

I removed the engine top cover ( four quick lock screws) oil cap slows you down; take it off, then put it back on. The first metal part on the engine after the MAP, which is after the air cleaner, is the Throttle Body. You will see a four wire plug connected to it. Push the lock in and pull the plug loose. Spray WD-40 onto and around the prongs that you now see. Then spray the inside of the plug to remove any moisture in it. Believe me , it gets in there. Connect and disconnect the plug several times to clean the connections. Put it back together and give her a test.
No more problems for over a month now.

The P0121 is not an uncommon problem with the xj, xk & s-type and I would strongly suggest checking the plugs first. Displacing the water with WD-40 was the right thing to do. My car I pulled the plug, cleaned it with CRC contact cleaned, replaced the contacts (TSB) and used Die-electric contact paste to displace any water from entering the plug again. You can read about it on my page TBoddy Hope this helps!

Gus,

Any luck finding the plug? I don't understand why Jag does not sell replacement plugs - seems stupid.

The THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR is made by Denso and their products are found on other makes of cars too. If I remember right, Toyota uses either the same or similar TPS. Make a outline of your plug and hit a few Wreaking Yards and see what matches and go from there.

Hey Glendoramike: I did exactly as instructed and all seems good for now. Thank you very much for the suggestion.

Red face wow!

I was just doing a search on my 2004 xj8 with 116,000 miles and the same problem. The car runs mint otherwise, had it since 37,000, did all maint., etc. A week ago, she starts quitting for no reason, for seemingly no reason. Was about to replace all the oxygen sensors, when I found this thread. I went out and did the WD-40 thing, and so far, so good. Thanks!

That same issue has happened several times on my '06. After great consternation, I discovered, much like some others here, that spraying CRC on the Mass Air sensor and into the throttle body, seems to clean off any 'gunk' that accumulates. I also spray the electric contacts with (I forget the name) the product designed to clean electric contacts.

This method resolves the issue, at least for 8 - 10 miles. It seems to me that as grime builds up, the computer gets a false readings. That may not be accurate, but certainly this solution solves the issue!
