2004 XJ8 New Member With Much Anguish and Suffering
Hi Folks,
I live in East Tennessee and I recently purchased a 2004 XJ8 from a friend. He inherited the car and he is not mechanically inclined so he sold it to me. I made him what I thought was a fair offer but now I realize I paid him twice what the thing is worth.
I consider myself a decent mechanic having worked on hot rods since I was 16 but this car if like nothing I have ever experienced before. Since I got it in November 2021 it hasn't really been that dependable of a car. Mechanically she is fine but electronically not so good.
I replaced the battery and now I'm getting a parking brake fault, U2523, B2141, B1318, B1672, P1797, P1642, and P1000. None of these seem like critical issues but I can't seem to make them go away and I refuse to take this thing to a dealer to turn off an OBD2 code.
I've copied the question from your Intro for advice from members with the same model.
You can ignore P1000 as this is a status code indicating all OnBoard Monitoring Tests have not been completed since the last code clear. I think there could be a typo with B1672 (?) as this is not a defined code for the 2004 X350. The lookups for the others are:

Have you already reset your parking brake? You need to start your car and then with your foot on the brake pedal, pull up on the parking brake lever. If you haven't already, give this a try. Hopefully this helps.
You will also have to reset your windows by lowering each one all the way down and then raising them back up. Make sure to continue to hold the up switches for two seconds after you have raised them completely up.
These steps have to be completed each time you disconnect the battery. Good luck!
Gregory,
Sounds like a touch of buyer's remorse. We all have had that .
When I first picked up my 04 XJR, the suspension fault light came on, the handling was erratic. I was bummed, but soon got things squared away and love the car now.
It will likely take some money to get everything right, but if you can work on it yourself, have patience and determination, it will be rewarded.
Or, go buy a Camry .
Water under the backseat appears to have been the issue
The other day I noticed moisture in the rear floor wells. I removed the back seat based upon another post on the forum where they stated they were having fuel gauge and parking brake problems because the wiring was sitting in water. This was the case with me also. After removing the seat and removing the disintegrating insulation pad (it's been leaking a long time) i found the wires sitting in water. There was a lot of moisture on the driver (USA) side that is either coming from the window seal or sun roof. The plugs in the lower left were sitting in water. They were very corroded. I cleaned them with carburator cleaner, and compressed air. The battery was not connected at the time. I have no park brake fault and my gas gauge is working. Hopefully it stays fixed
I would like to thank everyone for their help. I will keep you posted on if it stays fixed and if I can determine where the leak is. Can anyone tell me where the sun roof drains can be found? In response to one of the posts, I have downloaded an electronic workshop manual. If there is another manual that I should have can you please post the name of it. Also the only OBD2 reader that I have is a harbor freight zurich zr13. If someone can recommend a good one specific to the Jaguar (especially one that can clear codes) I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.
For the rear drains, this is a good thread. Very common problem and should be considered part of a scheduled routine maintenance. Good that you caught it!

There's a huge thread in General Tech Help with the combined wisdom on scanners and scan tools from simple code readers up to the factory SDD (Symptom Driven Diagnostics): https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/g...-%2A%2A-33347/
Hope you get to enjoy the Jag soon .Once you are driving a bit and get to know the car well enough while fixing ,sorting out problems they are indeed very reliable . They just have to be driven regularly .
211000miles on a 2003 xj8
Glad you got her fixed, now you will begin to see what all the fuss is around the X350. Just a great reliable car that rides wonderful. I had a few issues to sort when i made the purchase, but over the last year or so it's been perfect.
