Default 2004 xj8 questions

I could not pass up a deal on a 2004 xj8 that had a few problems I just wanted to get some expert advice before proceeding. theres a air ride error and when the car sits a few days it drops, when u start it up you hear the compressor click on and after awhile it raises up and you can drive.I'm not sure if I want to just replace the whole setup for a shock conversion kit or start by replacing the front shocks and maybe the compressor.I have a feeling the shocks are leaking. is there any other places I should check for leaks? and what would you replace first the shocks or the compressor?
2- the tranny shifts hard from 1-2 and while traveling 45-50 MPH range its searching for gears and the idle goes up and down 100rpm, I'm assuming I just need to pull the tranny and replace the torque converter, but before doing that I just wanted to get some input. its a high mileage car 148K

any input would be appreciated

have her checked and scanned.....The 1st place I would check for leaking shocks is the shock towers under the hood...Usually they hiss inside the inner rim next to the studs, take some soapy water and spray them to confirm...The pump should be quiet, usually a noisy pump indicates its worn...As for the shifting it could be dirty fluid, or mechanical, and at one time torque converters were going out with similar symptoms...either way make sure you get her checked by a good mechanic well aware with the vehicle...Also call Jaguar and run the vin and get as much info on the vehicle services as you can....good luck!

My advice is to slow down. The air suspension gets a bad rep, but it isn't that complicated. If yours drives fine but sinks when sitting for a few days, I personally would do much yet. The front shocks usually leak first, and when cold. They are really easy to replace using Arnott rebuilds. I personally don't subscribe to the conversion kit for these cars. The sir suspension is part of the reason I bought mine. It will prove itself, so don't just start replacing things ***** nilly.
As for the transmission, change the fluid (another easy job) and get the transmission reprogrammed/flashed at the dealer. Don't go pulling the trans yet.

Most importantly, spend an hour each night reading this forum. It is your best education. You will relax a lot when you read the knowledge here.

the compressor makes a pretty loud clicking noise when operating, I bought a android tablet so I can buy the app torque to check the codes, torque is not available for iPads. from what I have read online its pretty good

Easy?!

Yes. Our 2004 had an outstanding TSB for a transmission software update. Call a dealer and have them run your VIN for TSB's for your car. Between the software update and a fluid change, the transmission behaves pretty much like new. Klaus at the CTSC will be your best friend in the world when it comes time to service your transmission. He sells a quart of ZF Lifeguard for just under $20, my Jag dealer quoted me $78....
