2004 XJ8 Rough Shifting
have a 2004 XJ8,transmission shifts rough from 1st to 2nd,other shifts a lot better, also takes a couple of seconds or more to shift to reverse,i recently had a leaking plastic pan and changed that, just drained no flush, replaced with lifeguard 6,i think I got the level right using a temp gun but you always wonder if the level is right, any opinions?
thanks in advance

Was the vehicle level? Don't measure level by trans pan. Level measurement must be taken from the vehicle...
What are you using to get the LG6 fluid into trans?
Do you have a 90 deg. fitting on end of tube going into trans fill plug area to ensure all fluid gets into the pan and not partially swashed back out by the TCM.
Did you follow proper fill procedure including shifting through gears, including 2 - 5 on shifter during refill??
AC on?
Basically... from start...
Step 1..
Fill fluid until overflows (2 - 3L) put fill plug in trans - not too tight, start car, shift R, N, D, 2 - 5, D, N, R then Park.
Leave car running - add more fluid and cap off again.
Personally, I go through each gear again leaving a 10 second gap between each gear change.
Monitor temp. (From fill plug area)
At 36 - 38 deg C. take plug off.
If no fluid drips out add a bit let it settle while car is running. If you did the above correctly you'll be either "on the money" or need to add a lil bit more fluid.
At this point if you need to add a bit more fluid you still have a few degrees to play with...
Infrared is ok. Jaguar IDS platform is best to monitor the actual temp of trans fluid.
Where did you take the actual temp? From pan itself or near the fill plug?
A slight drip at 40 deg C. is what your looking for; like real thin weak stream or drip coming off the bottom of the plug area coming off the pan,
Nothing heavy.
Again, if no drip at 38 deg C you need to add fluid. If you don't cap off the trans by 45 - 50 deg C. you have to wait for trans to cool and start again from square one as you will have lost too much fluid.
Finally, sound to me your a bit low on fluid.
Best to rectify before causing some permanent damage to the gear box.

I have personally performed 4 of these changes on both Jaguars and Land Rover vehicles and learned from each one.
Check vehicle level from the frame rail.
Yes, monitor temp from as close to the fill port as you can and keep the beam away from the exhaust.
Not necessary to have adaptions cleared, unless you were experiencing shifting issues.
The old saying.. if it's not broken dont fix it..
