Greetings: Could someone tell me if all 2004 XJ8's came with the interior rear view mirror that had the compass built into it? I just purchased a 2004 VDP with navigation, but noticed that the mirror did not have the compass built into it. It's the electrochromatic mirror, but no compass. The manual shows a mirror with the compass, but does not mention if it was an optional item. Is it possible that they deleted the compass in the mirror becuase the car has the Nav system? Any response would be appreciated.

 

No compass when you have Nav - kind of redundant.

 

I have the 2007 XJ8L with navigation.......but no compass in the mirror.

Actually, I do wonder what it is meant for, after all, we do have a road network, (of sorts) here in li'll 'ole England; we dont need to cross the Steppes of Asia !!

 

It only seems to have been an option in the UK, even on the Daimler models, and cost 80GBP.

A 2004 US brochure shows it as standard but a 2009 brochure only shows it standard on the XJ8/XJ8L and notes:

A compass is included in the touchscreen navigation system, replacing the
mirror compass on cars with navigation. Navigation is standard on Vanden Plas, XJR and Super V8.

It would assume it was still available as an option though.

 

Sorry, I have a US Spec 2004 XJ8, with NAV and compass in the rear view. Can't find if it was an option, but I haven't seen one that doesn't have the button on the mirror to turn it on and off.

 

This is weird. I, too, have a US spec '04 XJ8 with NAV. But my mirror only has buttons for OFF and AUTO, and I believe these only control the Electrochromic capability of the inside rear view mirror. And yet my Driver's Handbook (owner's manual) on pg. 3-7 says one button ought to be labeled COMP, and serve to activate/deactivate the compass feature in the mirror's upper right hand corner. Not on mine! Hmmm.

I Have an 04 XJ8 (bought a month ago) no navigation and apparently no Compass in the rear view mirror. the only buttons are on the front of the mirror [Off] and [Auto] which seem to be for the dimmer only.

 

2004 XJ8 No nav. Yes compass.

I purchased this car new in early 2005. I remember looking at two other leftover 2004 basic XJ8's, neither had nav and both of those also had the compass in the rearview mirror.

 

Yes you can! Aftermarket rear view mirrors offer many optional features.
