2004 XJ8 VDP - squeaking noise from steering wheel

FWIW, my technician said my steering wheel "squeak" was caused by wear on the various electrical compression rings within the steering wheel hub. Cost to replace = $600...requires pulling the wheel, etc., etc., etc., about 3+ hrs. labor + parts. I have chosen to live with the noise, which comes and goes depending on outside temperatures.
He also said don't even think about squirting some WD40 in there...that would cause untold problems.
(My '04 XJ8 has 170K miles.)

I have started sucking out and replacing the fluid with Mobil synth ATF as some others here have tried, I see the oem spec for P/Steering fluid is Dex 111, does any one think the Mobil ATF is a better fluid to have in it than the original Dex 111, I hope I dont screw it up by adding this.

You're not sure? I added Lucas Oil Stop Squeak n' Leak based on your recommendation!!!! ![Icon Hyper](https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_hyper.gif)
Haha, by the way, it's hard to tell if it's worked. I did it yesterday but haven't had a chance to really drive it too much. It was still doing it this morning and it was about 50 degrees this morning (according to my car thermometer). However, it did seem to go away after I went for a short 15 minute drive. But it's pretended to go away before and come back with a vengeance before!

so yeah it is ok to use.
Amac, I know it is frustrating, I think some pumps are whinier than others and some get fixed just by adding one bottle of the Jag fluid.
I added one bottle, did the install procedure and it def helped, but then came back but not as bad.
That's when I sucked out and added almost a full bottle of the Lucasoil, which helped to stop 75 % of the noise when the car is warm, but its still whiney on cold start up for 5 minutes then gets quieter.
I am guessing that on a sensitive whiney pump it is a question of getting the right amount of "superlube" in there, I think that in the cold the Lucasoil additive might be too thick;we will see.
If this dont work I might try sucking out and replacing the fluid then adding 2 of the Jag bottles.

Out of curiosity, do you notice some wobbling/vibration in the steering wheel when steering at low speeds when the car is warm? I wonder if it's just the pavement, or if there is something wrong with my PS system.

Well, it's warm today and I noticed the car was doing it with moderate intensity again. No noise, but it feels almost like what a dipping/low idle feels like. However, the idle doesn't seem to be lowering to the point of causing vibrations/wobbling.
Has anyone else experienced this? It seems to only happen when the car is hot.

I added one to the brake resevoir while I had head up ***; one expensive mistake!
It is very corrosive to rubber, master cyl alone is $600.-- just for the part.
Looks like that is as far as the damage goes but still will be into at least $1000.00 plus by the time it is flushed and flushed and bled after replacement.

Am I killing my power steering pump? I only added about 1 quart of that lucas oil stuff in, and that was done by removing the fluid in the reservoir, filling it with lucas oil, running the car a day, then repeating the process, so I figure I only have a 30-40% concentration of this lucas oil stop leak stuff, at most.

LOL !,
next is some chicken fat,a pigs ear and some mice brains !
That should make it nice n slick.
Seriously that Lubegard stuffappears to have done the trick, I have big ears and there is no noise whatsoever, just make sure that you do not put it in the brake resevoir.

I am also experiencing the squeaking steering wheel, it's not the pump that makes the noise, according to the sb it is the pinion seal drying out? I have had the covers off and yes i think this could be the case, the noise is there even when engine switched off and with very small movements of the wheel, i tried to locate and it seemed to be coming from every where, quite how the additive works i don't know, but i'll give it a go and see what happens. (ps i did squirt some wd40 around the column, made no difference but crucially it did effect the dsc! but all is working ok again now.

Last fall I got the additive from: sngbarratt.com
When I installed it I did not have much hope as the squeak had been going on for years.
Low and behold, it has been quiet as a church mouse since then..
