Just wondering if anyone could tell me what a front brake job (Pads only) on a 2004 XJ8 Dealer or other mechanic? is $700 a high price? don't know how much location is relevant I am in NJ/USA. Thanks in advance

Smile Front brakes suggestion.

Pads from ebc (redstuff) are ceramic and will eliminate all that black dust!
About $90. If the rotors aren't warped (brakes shuddering) then all you need to do is remove the old ones, clean out the calipers, grease a few strategic spots and put the new pads in. Easy. Get somebody to show you how. Not a big deal.

Yes, $700 should get your 4 rotors and all new pads with change to spare.

Honestly, they should cost no more than they do on a Toyota. Rotors are the same as a Lincoln and so are the pads... Usually you have to do pad and rotors, but maybe you can squeak by just on pads. Imagine under $200 for pads only.

Default Check FAQ for XJ- DIY and save $$$

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...service-61323/

Review this FAQ link posted above for virtually everything you need to know for brakes pads and rotors including costs. Also review all the attachments in the post which are important for bleeding the system especially rear caliper with the integrate parking brake and reseting the electric parking brake. It's a pretty simple job that the average home mechanic can do. I would also recommend flushing the entire brake system and bleeding the system at least twice.

You can also pay the dealer $700 to $1000 easily or DYI your cost $317 for front and rear ceramic pads and four rotors

But would you trust your life with those ? Brakes are something I never skimp on, as also tyres.

There brakes meet or exceed OEM specs...I don't think a national company would sell an inferior product that would endanger the population of the world..I don't feel my lifes in danger with there brakes...I actually did my front rotors and pads and bought the top of the line Wagner thermo quiet pads...rotors have a 2 year warranty, which include warpage/pulsation

The price or the name of retailer alone rarely ensures a top quality product. There's nothing 'special' about OEM Jag parts that justifies their price.

I've paid just slightly more than the other poster for brake parts (being in Canada) and found the quality to be equal or superior to OEM equipment.

That's almost the same number quoted me by an indie Jag shop also (they claim on their adverts they're 20% cheaper than the dealer). I ended up going to a general repair shop near my house, and considered myself lucky.

Too bad I don't have the DIY talent.

2 hours of labor seems excessive given how simple the job is, even with the rotor swap. On our '04 XJR it took me about 15 minutes per side to swap pads. Swapping rotors would have added maybe another 10 minutes per side. Another 10 minutes to top up the brake fluid and bed the new pads and you'd be at 1 hour. Was this the first time the dealer's mechanic had ever done a brake job?

Cheers,

Don

It takes longer to jack up the car, setup jackstands, and remove the wheels than the brake job itself
