Default 2004 XJ8 wheel options

I just joined this forum after lurking for a while, and it has been a wealth of information!

We just purchased a blue 2004 Jaguar XJ8 with 62000 miles. It came with 20 inch wheels that we'll most likely sell, and we are currently looking for smaller wheels. I am having a difficult time finding the wheels I want.

What we are looking for:

17 inch wheels to mount snow tires on. We will be placing Michelin X Ice 3's on them, as we get a fair amount of snow here.

After searching for a while, I am assuming the base wheel will fit, which appears to be a 17x7.5 (the spare wheel in our trunk is an OEM 18 inch wheel). I would really like to buy the 17x8 Coventry Whitley wheels, buuut I am not sure they will fit. Some websites say they will fit (such as discountedwheelwarehouse), while others say they will not. Does anyone have experience fitting the 17 inch Whitleys on their 2004 XJ8? If not, are the OEM 17 inch wheels for the same year guaranteed to fit? How about the S Type 17 inch wheels?

Thanks for all your help!

why not look for stock 18 inch wheels on ebay that match the spare you have? the used wheels are about $125 to $150 each. Not sure that the 17 inch wheels would look as nice as the 18's. I have 18 inch Coventry wheels and winter tires for my 2004 XJR. this year I am trying not to drive the XJR in the snow, and have kept the stock 20 inch wheels on the car. I have my SUV for the winter.

That's also a good question Brandon. I haven't seen where the brake rotor changed in diameter from the 2003 to the newer 2004 style. If I'm not mistaken the stock brakes for both base models should be 305 mm. That's why I'm confused as to what wheels can fit on the 2004+.

Ryejag, I have looked at stock 18 inch wheels, and I would agree they do look better. I am only looking for something small from a tire price standpoint, as these will only be for snow tires. The 17 inch aftermarket wheels cost just a little more, and I'd be getting a brand new product that would hopefully be a bit stronger.

Just for information, I did call an online retailer and a local tire shop, and they both said the 17x8 inch Coventry Whitleys would fit on the base model 2004+ XJ8. They both even called TSW (the manufacturer for the wheels) and they "guaranteed" they would fit. Now Brandon has me wondering about the 16 inch wheels...

Hasn't anybody tried to fit the smaller wheels on a 2004+ XJ8?

X308 wheels will not fit X350 and newer.

Different bolt circle.

OEM wheels are usually of superior quality to aftermarket.

Thanks for the reminder of the bolt circle, I'd forgotten. Though I thought the Jaguar OEM wheels were somewhat soft and bend fairly easily..?

Thanks for the info.. I was hoping the smaller rims would fit😞. I really miss the smooth quality ride my 02 VDP gave as opposed to the pick up truck ride the 18 inch wheels give. Brandon

On my 2004 X350 (which has 18"x8 Luxury wheels for summer) I put 17"x7.5 Jaguar OEM wheels for winter.
You can find a set of 17" OEM on ebay from time to time. They fit perfectly, are nice and much lighter (forged wheels).
The big advantage of 17" wheels for winter is the much cheaper cost of the 235/55/17 tyres.

paydase, does the ride seem to be softer with the 17" wheels? I've considered changing to 17" wheels on my 04 XJ8.

I couldn't say so.
The 18" wheels already provide a comfortable ride (compared to 20", for sure).
My 17" are with winter tyres, so difficult to compare.

Well, after a lot of shopping, we bit the bullet and ordered the 17 inch Coventry Whitleys. Three different wheel distributors called the manufacturer (I assume TSW) for me and each time they said they would fit. The problem is, both the Coventry and TSW websites do not say that these wheels fit on my vehicle. Also, the distributor I wanted to purchase from, which came in quite a bit less expensive than the rest, would not guarantee that they fit...only that 18 inch plus would. So once I bought them, and they did not fit, I'd be on my own. I also did some research on the brakes, and from what I found, the 2003 to 2004 base brake setups are the same diameter on the XJ8's. And as far as I know the 2003's came stock with 16's. I still had the dilemma that these particular 17's would not fit, as I have had that happen in the past on other cars...it's all on the manufacturer. So anyways, those who are wondering, the 17x8 Coventry Whitleys do fit on a 2004 Jaguar XJ8. The stick on wheel weights came very close to rubbing the caliper, but the wheel itself has no clearance issues. Here are some pics after washing and sealing them (but before the suspension reset):

Lovely colour for that car !! All you need now is a bit of summer weather.

I guess Idaho gets a lot of snow and cold winter weather. Here in the UK (Cheshire), it is above zero but very windy, and lots of salt spreading on the roads, (I suppose they have to use it up somehow !). In winter we tend to use the wife's New Beetle as this has plastic wings.

Those are the exact rims I just put on and I agree they ride great with all weather Michelins. Much lighter and look almost like what I removed. My original 18" rims had 8 "spokes" and the same green growler in the center cap. I will probably have the curb ash repaired on my stock 18's and may use them again with a taller profile. The difference in the speedometer will not matter that much as I am not often on the high way and when I am seldom over 70 mph. Here you can only really go as fast as everyone else.
