2004 XJR - Has anyone dropped the front subframe?
#21
Ok, not too bad. now for those alignment bolts... if im doing a font end rebuild and swapping out the air for coilovers, How necessary are they? Ive seen pics from the XF aftermarket sway bar post where they dropped the subframe completely. seems like it would be easier to mount the new sway bar and properly lube the urethane bushings like this. appreciate your thoughts / any info on the purpose of the alignment bolts. service manual just tells how to instal them. Thanks in advance!

If you do drop the subframe you will need them. You may be able to put the frame up w/o them but I was glad I had them. The installation was a breeze (except for the torquing part)

Yes, I have done EVERYTHING documented in this forum. *EVERYTHING*. Including the test you mention here. And, I did replace the say bar links plus the sway bar bushings even though my gut told me I was wasting money. The shocks is the only variable left. By December, I will know for sure.

Hey great post!
My XJ8L VP has a clunking front air shock on it now that doesn't leak but makes loud clunks when going over big bumps. The air shock evidently needs to be replaced and I was just about to go with Arnott's coil conversion kit....but your posting is making me think about trying out your solution....thanks again for the info.
I'll post how my conversion goes.

That said, now that i've received my Strutmasters sport kit...I'm not convinced the shocks themselves are Bilsteins. While the website shows yellow bilstein shocks, mine were generic black units and close inspection of the current Bilstein S type units yields various differences from what i received. (Springs are definitely Eibach though..)
Given that the kit was on sale for $999.00 and real sport Bilsteins shocks could be had for 400 bucks, im thinking of making a hybrid system that will be much higher quality than anything out there.
Part #s for 2004 S Type R with 4.2 supercharged:
Bilstein 24-067430 Monotube Shock Absorber, Front, 36mm
Bilstein 24-067720 Monotube Shock Absorber, Rear, 46mm
So i'd still use the upper mounts that came with the strutmaster kit, the eibach springs, and of course the warning light disabler. Price will still be a few bucks less than Arnott
