2004 XJR: Loud Metallic Crack During Slow Speed Turms
Several weeks ago I bought an '04 XJR with 30K miles with remaining factory and SE warranties.During the test drive I noticed the steering wheel had a slight shimmy above 60mph, so I agreed to buy the car subject to getting that fixed. After picking up the car, the problem continued, so I took it back to the service shop. The mechanic attributed the problem toan unevenly weightedright front tire and replaced it with a new one (an odd problem). The tire switchreduced the shimmymarginally...the shimmy still occurs occasionally. I mention the shimmy because it might be related to a second problem:
Since I've had the car at home, I've noticed a loud metallic crackwhen i turn in slow, tight quarters, usually when I am parking or maneuvering toleave a tight space. I presumed the problem might be a ball joint or sticking brake component (new rotors and pads were installed before I bought the car and the e-brake was sticking) and took the car back for service a few weeks ago. To my surprise, the diagnosis was a faulty steering rack. The rack was replacedunder warranty (at a significant cost to Jag from what I saw on the service dox).
The cracking sound continues though, and seems like it is getting more pronounced. I will be scheduling another service visit this week. Anybody have a similar experience or ideas on the source? My guess is still some sort of joint failure?
Aside from the inefficient service, this has been a great ride. I'd had a '99 XJ8 previously that I sold after a few months (I found it too soft after driving a string of sports cars). The suspension on the XJR strikes a perfect balance between firmness and comfort for me, the extra 100hp are nice for highway passes and thecabin andAlpine systemmake a great place to spend hours on road trips (just did DC-NY-DC this weekend averaging 22 MPG for the Big East Tournement Final). Defintiely a "cracking car" in the British sense...now if I could only get rid of the car's cracking noise it would be the utlimate Q-ship.

Cant find it now, but there was a recent thread posted by someone who had a 'clunk' noise when initially turning the steering wheel. i remember the symptom, but I cannot remember, nor find, the post with the part that was replaced. I think Jag-genious diagnosed it correctly though, he'll have a suggestion for you to look at.

I had a sound like this...
And it turned out that it was one of the nuts on my left front strut tower that wasn't tightened properly (visible when the hood is up).
It was allowing the stut seat to "move" when I turned or went over a bump of any kind. It was a loud pop, and occurred mostly when I turned, but alos happened when I went over bumps.
