2004 XJR rear seat back removal
Hi all, I got a new air suspension computer brain to try and fix my air suspension fault code I keep getting. It was a freebie at this point so I thought I would take a swing. In understand it is behind the seat back and not accessible through the trunk.
Any thought on how to remove the seatback?
Let me know and thanks.

Open rear door. Reach down along corner of Seat bottom and there is a lever at each end and middle. They are tricky and small levers but once you figure them out they will allow you to release the seat bottom. Remember to disconnect the heating element wiring and any other wiring you may have connected to the seat bottom. Once that's done and you've taken the bottom seat out of the car you can see the bolts at the bottom of the seat back and pull forward watch for the seat belt plastic guides and again if you have wiring(entertainment center). Should allow you the space you need to access the rear deck and seat back metal backing. Although I don't remember the module being behind the seat. I thought it was in the trunk area behind the carpeted panel on passenger side. Also thought that you'd want that programmed for your specific car. Someone will be along shortly to verify im sure. Good luck

The first time I did this it took a while to work out (even with the diagrams) but now i can do it in a few minutes
First grab a few large screwdrivers, dowel whatever. Just make it about 1in diamater or so
Starting from one side run your fingers under the seat lip starting from the outside
You will find the first latch about 1/3 of the way to the tunnel
Put some weight on the seat and push the lever till it releases
You might find this difficult the first time more because your doing this blind
Once you release the pin lift up the seat base a bit and put in you spacer
This stops it re-latching
Now move onto the clip near the tunnel releasing it in the same way and putting a spacer under the seat
Now do the other side the same way
Once you release the last pin catch the base will swivel up and come out
For the back you will see a pull card, pull this and the seat back swivels down
Move the belts out of the way and remove the seat back
Instillation is the reverse process
Cheers

Below are links to photos of my recent work to replace the piston ring with a new one from Bagpipingandy.com (Andy is a member of this forum).
Check the download area here for the X350 workshop manual, which may be helpful in the future.
Cheers,
Don

Back seat removal and suspension module
I installed the Black Dog kit from Motorcars Ltd. It comes with shorting plugs for the shocks and a resistor for the suspension module which as far as I can tell keeps the suspension faults from showing up on the dash in any event. As long as you have no suspension faults currently and disconnect the battery before beginning the work, you should have no faults when you fire everything back up. The coilovers work perfectly both in ride quality and handling with the worry of having to replace a shock or compressor forever banished. There have been no driveability issues. I do not intend to ever own another car with air bag suspension.
Hopefully the pictures show the black release levers on the small oval receivers for the seat cushion. Move them sideways to release the seat clip. After removing the seat bottom you should see the black nylon straps coming from the seat back, lying in the floor. Pull them to release the catch holding the seat back. Fold the seat forward and lift out.
Hope this helps.

As Don B said, the very last thing to be checked and/or replaced is the ASM, it is normally much more basic mechanical things that fail on the air suspension system. In fact, this is the first post I have seen where somebody is proposing to replace the ASM.
If the user could post the fault codes that will have been flagged, it would be possible to see where the fault may lie.

Zip tie it
This is close to my pulling the air compressor to verify seal was installed correctly. Low chance, but worth the effort.
