2004 XJR - Spark plug replacement - Oil in #5 and #6 spark plug channels
I replaced the spark plugs today since I had the cowl out. I believe they were never replaced. What came out was NGK IR IFR5N 10 and what I put back in was NK Iridium IX BKR5EIX-11
The spark plug themselves were ok. However, in the spark plug channels for #5 and #6 cylinders, there was engine oil. Enough to be disturbing. It did not come from the cylinder itself. Rather through the surrounding area. Is there a way for engine oil to find itself into those channels?
There are a lot of threads on spark plug replacement and its difficulty. #7 and #8 are troublesome. However, for #7 (rear, passenger side, with the cowl removed and the air intake removed, it was a snap. Not an issue.
On cylinder #8, if the braces are removed, then replacing the spark plug becomes a non-issue.

Yes. The most common reason is failed spark plug well seals, which are part of the cam cover gasket system. They are part 3 in the diagram below, and there is one for each plug well:
Replacing your cam cover gaskets and plug well seals should solve the problem.

Don

Thanx Don. Did my research using JEPC, got the part numbers, went to Merriam and Gaudin Jaguar to check prices and get the superseded numbers. So Guadin was a little over $100, Merriam $130 and eBay came to the rescue at a little over $70 (all include shipping - 2 gaskets, 8 seals). Might as well do it while the car is sitting on the lift going nowhere any time soon...

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! It's great to have you with us!
The beauty cover or appearance cover is certainly an "engine cover," but the covers described in this thread are the camshaft covers or valve covers that seal the tops of the two cylinder heads and provide mounting points for the ignition coils and other components.
My recollection is that the beauty cover on your 5.0L engine just lifts up with a gentle pull at each corner to separate it from the push-on fasteners.
For instructions on removing the camshaft covers, you can download the XF Workshop Manual in pdf format at this link:

That helps a lot, thank you for the clarification
I think I may have posted in the wrong thread so if I did, my apologies.
