Default 2004 XJR transmission fault

After having the transmission pan replace for a leak I have been having transmission issues. The 1st time I got in the car after it was parked overnight and it wouldn't do anything. I got "Transmission Fault, Cruise Control Override, Restricted Performance". I tried several times to start it over the weekend with no luck. Had it towed to my garage on Monday and it started right up with no faults when they took it off of the truck.

Since then I've gotten "transmission fault" twice after driving in stop and go traffic. My garage ran a diagnostic which came back Transmission Control Module P0782 2-3/3-2 Gar Load Fault. They said they thought I might need a new computer within the transmission. Any thought from anyone with the same problem? I'm thinking there's something loose and not connected securely.

are you sure the tranny is filled properly? somewhat tricky to check the level since the tranny must be up to temp and then you have to check the level from underneath.

I taking it in tomorrow afternoon and leaving it. My mechanic says he wants to let it sit overnight so it can check the fluid "cold". This problem started occurring after he changed a cracked transmission plan and had to replace some of the transmission fluid. I've question him several times if the transmission fluid level might be off but he says he filled it when he did the repair. I am having him reset the transmission computer as well to see if that might help.

Thanks for your response as it makes sense to me to check the fluid level when it is at temp.

The transmission fluid have to be top off while the engine is running with the filler cap off, then measure then temp of the fluid and cap the fill plug in when the transmission fluid reach 40 degrees celcius(not fahrenheit) to have the correct fluid level.

It sounds to me like your mecahnic is not familiar with this transmission. Be careful. As Casper said, checking the level and using the right fluid takes some special knowledge. Use the ZF Lifeguard 6 fluid and check the level at 40 deg C. with the engine running.

Seems my mechanic has been working on Jags for 20 years or so. I asked him how the transmission fluid should be check and he said when it is cold. Right now he is suggesting that the transmission be rebuilt and a new TCM installed. We're talking in the ballpark of $4k-6k. I'm still hoping for some other recourse to address the issue.

Is this how he do it? If not go find somebody else.
