2005 XJ8 heat issues

On a right hand drive car you take the glove box out to get to the heater core so it is probably the same on a left hand drive car. I have had mine changed and haven't noticed any new noises.

Latest update. Shop did another flush, and got a lot of antifreeze-dyed junk out. Refilled and bled system and heat is markedly better. This was tried as a last resort because heater cores are back-ordered on the east coast. Given the improvement in heat, I'll live with this as a good alternative to dash disassembly. General consensus about poor heat in these cars seems to be that it's either the thermostsat or the heater core...not a lot of electronic heater control issues. Will keep people posted. Thanks.

I think I'm in the same boat. 05 XJ8L, very cool air from the far left hand face vent, and increasing temp as you move to the right.
I've been living with it for a while now, using the defrost/feet setting for all of my heating needs.. which actually works well. As soon as we have a decent day I plan on trying a flush. I do have an extended warranty which I may end up calling on...

Keep in mind that these cars have an aux electric coolant pump for the heat circuit. If it fails, the engine circulation will provide some heat but not much, only what can muscle past the pump vanes. The low coolant flow may contribute to clogging the cores as well.
The opened cores I have seen are clogged by a gel, not sand, probably from mixing the wrong coolant with Dex Cool. It might gather in the core when the pump fails and the flow slows. Dex cool is famous for gelling if mixed with the wrong stuff. The X300s were famous for this problem.

why are R types worse? is it the fact their is a cooling loop in the supercharger that may not be full of coolant? or this another difference? I have a 2004 XJR that does not put out heat as well after driving awhile thru the upper vents. on short trips heat is good both to the floor and upper vents. Any ideas or where to go from here? And what about the coolant pump. I have not checked that out either. I have read that it can be rebuilt.

I have a similar problem, no heat on the left, so-so on the right. also my temp runs cool (1/4 way up the gauge most of the time) occasionally gets to half way, so I'm thinking thermostat. Where is this aux pump? Do you know which fuse and the location of it? 2004 XJR with 200,000km. Thx

Hey Stu, i'd grab the entire handbook for your car from here -> TOPIx - TOPIx
you'll find the fuse locations much easier than trying to describe it on here. Good luck!

I believe the aux heat pump is under the coolant expansion tank on a bracket in the area where the metal heater lines come together. This is on the right hand side between the radiator and the block. It should be running anytime the ignition is on so turn on the ignition and put a hand on it see if you can feel the vibration or hear it.

Hi guys, reading through this thread, nothing here seems to match my dilemma, so hope someone can shed a light for me, no heat in cabin at all, put heater on, lose coolant from under the bonnet/hood somewhere.
But when I was investigating I noticed one of the radiator hoses was being getting into a collapsing situation, with engine and heating on, when heating is not switched on the coolant / hose is fine, so definitely a heater problem but just cant find where to start.
any help or pointer would be more than welcome

Hi Lukie.
You describe collapsing hose and leak. You're not indicating that your engine is overheating though, causing an overflow "somewhere". My first assumption is lack of coolant in the heater core due to the leak, but you may certainly have a clogged heater core, and if it's clogged enough to collapse your hoses, replacement is your only option.
But before we get ahead of ourselves...
I recommend you 1st - Find the leak via a pressure test, repair it, flush your system, replace your thermostat and refill with dexcool/distilled water 50/50 mix per the manual. While you're flushing, you can back flush the heater core to see if it's completely clogged. Unfortunately, you can only tell if it's partially clogged by cutting it open.
BTW if your hoses are soft when the engine is cool (which happens with age) replace them too once you find the leak.
Let us know your progress.

It is possible that the cooling system is low on coolant. Is the tank overflow tank filled to the top? If not fill to the top run the vehicle with the heater on full hot for a short trip then let it cool and check the coolant again.
What does the temperature gauge read? should be in the middle.
The overflow tanks could be leaking, the thermostat could be bad. And of course the heater core could be bad.
