Default 2005 Xj8L Slow Warmup

Recently joined to get advice on a slow warmup issue. T-Stat housing was replaced due to small leak around 110k, I am @ 172k now. Fear internals of housing may be damaged causing t-stat no seal and slow warmup issue. I am open to suggestions and others experience with a slow warmup. Symptoms happened all of a sudden, heater on auto not as warm as usual. Car does not overheat but it is cool temps here in So Cal LA right now. Ordered a new housing from the dealership and some 8mm crows feet as another user pointed out were useful for removal of housing.

Thanks for your time

James S.

Most likely, a stuck open t-stat is the reason for the slow warming. The t-stat assembly has three seals, so if something is leaking, it makes sense to replace the entire housing assembly with the t-stat. Shoul be available for about 100 bucks.

Thanks man, that was my thought too, the housing is in really clean and nice external condition due to replacement 50 or so ago... so no leaks but I ordered a whole assembly just to be safe. I figure I'll need the parts anyway at some point...might as well do the whole shebang. I hope it is just a stuck thermo. Ill update this thread after this weekend with what the failure mode was so if someone else comes searching for the same symptoms. In my BMW 525 e34 I put 200k on a thermostat and it's still good...this car it seems I need a new housing every 50k, surprised the thermo itself if it's failing because it only has 50 or 60 k..... oh well. I think the design is a little goofy too, I like the standard designed ones I think they are more robust. Going to replace the spring clamps with hose clamps as well.

Thanks again James

Are you saying the dash gauge never gets to normal operating temp? Or is it just because there is less heat out of the interior heating vents.

Gauge gets to normal operating temp, just the time from cold to temperature seems to be longer. It seems to take 5-8 miles before it gets to operating temp. It seemed like before it was a mile or two. I suppose I never really watched the temp gauge before as closely. I replaced the thermostat this weekend, still seems to be the same.

Make sure all air is purged from cooling system, including heater. Speaking of wich: heater ON/OFF does it makes a difference?

With heater running it takes longer to get up to temp it seems.

Was just out in mine. Temp was about 0c/32f and it took 8km/5mi to come up to full operating temperature on the gauge.

+1
My commute is 10mi one way. The temp needles reaches middle point about half the way to work.
Short comute is part of the reasons I do not drive jag every day.
