2005 XJR Evaluation
Hello forum - You might get a lot of these but I appreciate your input. I grew up in a family of XJ6 and XJ8s but not the mechanically inclined family.
I'm looking at a 2005 XJR in BRG over tan with 75k miles with an ask for $8k. The seller disclosed one airbag has gone bad but otherwsie the car is pretty clean.
What's your opinion on the asking price?
Many thanks for your input.

Moe,
By "air bag", perhaps you might mean "air strut"?
($8K for an XJR is a deal, regardless. See the stickies forum header for new owner repairs generally involved, including air struts. If indeed interior air bag went off, check to see if it was totaled; eg, branded title).
- Slightly newer models - late '06 - '07, have the better internals, plus retained their good looks, if you're seriously inclined toward these wonderful cars
- Caveat: "Most expensive Jag you can own is a cheap one"
- Garaged and original, needing some maintenance, is what you want. Rough is impossible to fix, at least cost effectively
- Once sorted, very durable and comfortable car. Sneaky fast, even by today's standards. My '07 XJR "Nanny" just topped 155K miles on return leg of her seventh cross country trip in the last five years. Also BRG/tan, and a real head turner on the highway
- (BRG for '07 was actually "Jag Racing Green", a metallic BRG. Maybe your '05 is too? Beautiful, even to the casual looker)

If you mean "the ECU says it is faulty" then I'd be fine with going ahead. It may well be just a corroded or loose connection. Even if not, sensors, control units, connectors, even the airbag itself are readily available.
Actually I'd spend the few hundred clams and have it checked out by a Jag specialist no matter what. Cheap insurance. But if it checks reasonably well, $8k seems reasonable to me. Ask yourself how much life you think it has left. Would you pay $8k to drive an XJR for $50k miles? [That's 16 cents a mile, plus maintenance and repairs.] I would.
To that point: Ask for a repair history; if not available, ask what work he's had done to the car in the past two years. If it's only a little, you may -- MAY -- have an issue (neglected car? Or cherry puff); if it's a lot, you may have an issue (abused problem child? or meticulous owner who pored over every little thing). Either way, an inspection would seem to be in order.
FWIW I bought an '04 for $12k two years ago, but it had only 40k miles, one owner, and had been maintained at the same dealership its entire ownership period. AND they had just had both front struts replaced. The more cherry the car, the more you should be willing to pay for it. Or at least will have to.
