Default 2006 XJ8L Bonnet Open Error

Hello,

Can someone tell me where the bonnet closed sensor is on a 2006 XJ8L? Thought it was on one of the hood latches but have not been able to find it.

Thank you for your time.

Jim

Below is the location of the hood/bonnet open switch. It will be part of the latch, but on the bottom side. You should see a connector and wiring going to it.

It's on the right hand latch if your standing in front of the car simple job remove the cover between the headlights and the grille makes it easier, you will see the catch there is a small cover over the latch remove the cover and you will see the switch this is a common fault usually sends the alarm off in the middle of the night

I 'fixed' mine by putting a small piece of Kit-Kat foil between the pins of the connector on the switch. When you put the harness connector back it squashes the foil and it short circuits the switch - no more spurious alarms

Sometime I'll get a replacement switch ... sometime.

Connectors wires will usually come out with a paper clip ground down flat, or a tool to remove them. Tighten up the female part of connectors, open the clip on the back, that holds it in place in the plug a touch, then reinsert, the connection should fit a lot better now.

A common problem is that one of the clips on the plastic housing of the switch breaks so it won't stay in its proper position on the latch mechanism. An easy fix is to fashion a jumper wire to insert across the terminals in the harness electrical connector and fix it in place with electrician's tape (or heat shrink tubing if you have some). Secure the connector to the metal framing with a zip tie or such so it doesn't flop around. You won't get the false bonnet open alarms anymore, but you'll also have to pay attention to know when the bonnet really is open. Of course, drivers have been doing that for 100 years anyway....

Cheers,

Don

Another reason is that oil from the latch above the switch works its way down into the switch and causes contact problems. Jag's official advice ... don't oil the latch !

Thank you all for all the great suggestions. I did a 'quick' fix using part of a paper clip. Will fix correctly once I get a few more important items taken care of.

May not need to touch it again.
