Default 2007 XJ8 Problems with rear brake piston

Hi people I'm new to the forum so I hope I'm doing this right. I'm doing a rear brake job on my 2007 XJ8 and cannot get the piston to collapse. I believe I have the parking brake released and have opened the bleeder valve but piston will not move. Any suggestions.......Mike B

As MK 82 hints, you need a special tool to retract the piston, because the handbrake mechanism even though released, prevents you pushing the piston back. I believe some sort of screwing action is needed on the piston using the tool.

Default Rear brake problem

I found out the piston needs to turn in a clockwise direction to retract itself. A special spanner wrench is needed to do it safely. I rented one from O Rileys auto. Noe exact but works.

Don't recall exactly how I did it but I managed to retract mine without a special tool. I engineered something.

These are the tools that I have for Calipers. I use the Tool Set for the rear calipers and the Clamp on the front. The Tool Set clamp applies pressure and turns the piston at the same time.

The third photo shows how the Tool Set Clamp is positioned. (Photo is of Passat so it is a different caliper.)

Default Before you damage your rear caliper read my post!

I have complied a very complete instructions on XJ brake jobs. Read all the attachments also. The electric emergency brake is a complication which requires a retraction tool for the caliper and also a re-set procedure. Follow this and you'll save a lot of time.
