Default 2011 XJ Supercharged stuttering engine

Had vehicle for 3 months with many problems. One issue I haven't seen others discussing is the engine. My XJ will shake and stutter as if it's about to stall. It is most noticealbe within the first 30 minutes after starting it up in the mornings, and while idling (at lights, stop signs, etc.). As each week goes by, it gets progressively worse, and even cut out once. The dealer will be looking at this next week, and claims there is a software update to fix this. Pretty scary to think bad software can cause your engine to stall.

In any event, I noticed the NHSTA has a recall notice for the 2010 XF and XK models with 5.0 engine, and the recall sounds like the exact problem I have experienced. That recall indicates the problem could result in a "crash". Of course, it happens usually while the car is still, but otherwise it seems like the same/related issue. Those cars have been out longer than XJ, so maybe the problems in the XJ have no manifested yet. Or maybe it's just the symptoms are coincidental and my XJ problem is something else altogether.

Anyhow, have other's experienced this issue yet?

Sounds more like a vacuum leak somewhere or a faulty injector. Does the engine rpm wander up and down at an idle?

Not really, sometimes you will see the RPM dip down, but only slightly, and not all the time. Whatever it is, they are convinced a "software update" will resolve it. We'll see when I get it back.

These new 5 litre V8s have direct petrol injection to each cylinder unlike the previous engine. So Jaguar are probably on a learning curve at the moment. Doesnt help the early owners, of course.

LOL and people pay 70+ grand to test their new engine.... this is why you dont buy anything as soon as it's out , gotta wait for a year at least because none of those factory tests will be as complicated as real life conditions.

I generally agree you should avoid first model years, but this car was delayed for a very long period, ostensibly as JAG was committed that no major problems surface. My dealer even told me JAG would not let this car be delivered to me until they were certain there woudl be no quality issues arise. I also got a short term lease, so I could walk away from this after a relatively short period. But, it seems the mantra still holds true. Even with full assurances, free maintenance, etc., you should still avoid first year models.

Or manufacturers would never change the cars they make.

They attempted to fix this with some software changes (they said). Before, it would idle at about 500 RPM after starting and stutter. Now, for about 45 seconds after starting, it will stay about about 1,500 RPM...then slowly move down to about 700. I guess their "software" fix was to just rev it up higher, which I guess is fine, but it seems to still stutter some. I will know for sure tomorrow morning
Strange thing, I was told there was a servcie bulletin for this by the Dealer, but no one else is mentioning this as an issue with their car. So why a SSB if it's just me? Somethign seems strange about this.

I only use high grade. They told me it was in fact a software problem, so that must be what it is. The software fix, did not fix it. It seems to only hide it in the first minute or two by programming the engine to rev higher at idle. Once it moves back down to 750 rpm (was 500 before the did software change), it will still stutter sporadically. Definitely not a gas issue. My concern is they recalled the XF and XK current models with the same engine as the XJ...for an engine stalling issue. If you read the recall notice on NHSTA site, it reads like to could be my issue. I am no car technician, so I could be wrong. But from a layman's perspective, it seems similar, and they said dealers would fix the cars with a sofware update, and that is what they did to mine. Again, could jsut be coincidental, but it's the same engine, and it feels like it's not getting enough feul at times.
