AC compressor sounds like a garbage disposer
Hello everyone, I have a 2004 Vanden Plas, dual front air, no rear air controls, with a bad AC compressor. Rockauto does not list a compressor for a VDP, but DOES list one for an XJ8. Are they different? or does Rockauto think all VDP's had front and rear air. (I assume they are different compressors for quad(?) air vs. dual air). Thanks for any insight.

Hi Larry,
A good place to answer your questions would be either gaudinjaguarparts.com or jaguarmerriamparts.com, where you can look up part numbers for the Base XJ8, VDP and XJR to see if cars with or without rear climate control use a different compressor. I think there's a very good chance that your car uses the same compressor as the Base XJ8.
An even better means of looking up parts is to download and install the Jaguar Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) for free from this forum:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...uctions-48194/
In case it helps, our '04 XJR has dual front air controls but only rear vent controls, no rear temperature controls.
Please keep us informed.
Cheers,
Don

Don, yours sounds like the same set up as mine.
Has anyone ever changed a compressor on an x350? or paid to have it done?
It is an incredible amount of labor, plus the access to the critical o-rings is very limited. I almost think it would be easier to drop the front sub frame. I'm sure that's the way it is assembled at the factory.

Yes, You have to remove it to replace the O Rings from Bagpipeandys kit. It really is straight forward to do and can be done by a medium knowledgeable DIYer. Many people have done it on this forum.
I think there is a write up on it somewhere here, do a search and save yourself $$$$.

Does Bagpipe Andy do AC compressors? I was not aware.

With the questionable quality of a rebuilt compressor, and the price of new, I elected to go with a used compressor from Ebay. After two months and a couple of trips over 200 miles, the used compressor is working very well, with icy cold air. Guess I'm just lucky!!
