Three drive cycles of at least 17 miles each have passed since then with no sign of the ASF message, whereas before it would appear after 10 mins every single time no matter what. I'm hesitant to claim victory, but its an encouraging development to say the least.

That sounds encouraging, XJ8JR. If the ASF does eventually return, perhaps it would be worth flushing the valve block connectors with zero residue electrical contact cleaner spray to see if that effects a more permanent solution. Please keep us informed! I for one am very encouraged!

Cheers,

UPDATE: The ASF reappeared briefly on Saturday, but was gone by later in the day and has not reappeared since. If it's a once-a-week occurrence, I can live with it.

UPDATE: The ASF eventually disappeared completely, except twice on very cold days last winter. But I have not seen it since. Victory!

XJ8JR, I know this thread covered multiple problems - however, it is not clear: Is your clunking problem is completely resolved?

Yes it was! Since then I have also converted over to coil-over shocks. Good thing too, since we had a colder-than-usual December in LA this year. I actually did see a few other XJs with their suspensions on the ground

Try disconnecting the upper ball joint again and see if you have any play in it while trying to move the ball joint up and down in its seat. Hold the top of the control arm in one hand and the threaded end of ball joint in the other and push up and down hard and see if there is play in it. If so it is shot. This was bad on my car and replaced them with cheap ebay control arms which lasted a wopping 3 months and noises came back. Moral of story don't buy the cheap ones. Also, you could have a second person tap with a hammer lightly on the control arm end while you are in the car and see if the noise is the same or similar. My bet is the ball joints in the control arms are shot and or the sway bar end links but you are already going to replace those.

I have already purchased the control arms from eBay. This is where I went to: Jaguar XJ8 XJR Upper Control Arm Arms Ball Joint Bushing C2C38956 C2C38957 L R | eBay

Dunno if $358 is considered cheap for the pair. I will find out! I will be replacing these this weekend and will document and report in a separate thread.

I know it’s about 3 years since your post but I’m looking at parts from the same eBay seller. How did yours hold up? Thanks!

Wow, three years. They are holding up, can't complain. I have put 13K miles since replacement for reference.
