Default Any idea on a HID repair cost?

Greetings Jaguar wizards,

One or the HID headlights on my 2004 VDP is not working, any idea what the repair bill might look like? I just bought the car and if the bill is too high I might persuade the dealer to take care of it.

Thanks,
Venelin

That's a very open ended question. It depends on what's wrong with it. Power pack, lamp, fuse, wiring, BCM, etc. At the least an hours worth of labour would be involved. If you just bought it, I would take it back where you got it and tell them they sold you a car with a bad headlamp and get them to repair it at their cost.

I'm puzzled by this. Left HID is not working. I swapped the light bulbs - no luck (left still not working). I checked the fuses (F8 & F9) - both are fine.

The interesting piece is that when I turn on the lights, I don't hear the leveling motor moving on the dead bulb either - are these getting power from the same place as the HID ballast? Any suggestions how to trace the wiring?

Thanks,
Venelin

PS: the seller from another state, he is sending me a replacement ballast (which he believes it the culprit) but I'm not that convinced.

at least he is working with you, hopefully he will take total care of it for you...does the car still have a warranty?

I can't remember now that I think of it but what about telling the dealer? No warranty from the person?

The selling dealer is sending mea new ballast. It will be here tomorrow. He will also pay for the labor - not a bad deal overall, except it is taking forever and it is not clear to me if the ballast is at fault to begin with.

I was trying to see if it is something simple I can do myslef and saveus the hassle.

It is likely the ballast if fuses are good. You could always check for power at the connector.

FJT, how do you detach the headlight power cable? Just pull, or I need to unlock it somehow. I see two red clip looking thins on both sides of the plug, but can't figure out what are they for. May be my cable is just stuck and I need to pull harder, but I tought I'd ask first.

I got the plug out - there is a red locking clipyou need to pull on the side, then remove the plug. The strange thing is that I have a replacement headlight assembly and when I plugget that one, the HID is still not working as well as the motor.

So I would guess power is lost somewhere. Does anyone have a description of the pins of the headlight plug so I can check the power?
Any ideas on what might be the next thing to check?

Thanks,
Venelin

This headlight issue is driving me crazy. I'm either the most unlucky person on the planet or a complete idiot.

The story so far: driver side headlight does not work, nor does the leveling motor. All other lights work. I got a replacement headlight assembly plugged it in place of the old one (withouth removing the old one, just plugged the cable) -same issue HID and motor don'twork, everything else does.

I played with the fuze box to trace which cable provides power to the HID (pictures here http://picasaweb.google.com/veffremo...ey=cPHFQ1DxTTc). Checked theplug pinhas 12vwhen I turn the light on. The last thing I tried I plugged the replacement headlight in the power plug of the right (working) headlight and it still does not work.

So either my replacement headlight has exactly the same problem, or I have no idea how to plug a cable. Is there anything else I need to connect besides the plug on the picture bellow?

Uppon further examination turns out I'm really unlucky man. The replacement headlight I got has a bad ballast as well. I have updated pictures on http://picasaweb.google.com/veffremo...ey=cPHFQ1DxTTc- you can see the corosion and some sludge on the electronics - so it seems the module has been flooded.

For thos of you interested in "what's inside" I have a few pics on the headlight assembly.

Finally a month later I got a replacement headlight assembly from eBay. Plugged it in and voila - HID works. Now I'm contemplating should I replace it myself or go to the dealer. The instructionssay the front bumper cover needs to go. Can this be done without lifting the whole car up?
