Default Are anyone else's auto headlights very finicky (turning off/on/off) based on light?

Ive noticed my auto headlights love to cycle on and off with even the slightest change of light. For example. If i go under a bridge for 2-3 seconds the headlights come on. Same goes with driving in dusk/twilight. The headlights can't seem to make up their mind with respect to turning on and off.

Is this normal function? Or is there a way to set a delay before the auto headlights turn on?

Yes you can adjust the delay. Unfortunately, I know longer have my XJ so I can't tell you how but I assume it would be in system settings on your touch screen. It would help others if you put the model and year of your car in your signature.

Sorry, my car is a 2005 XJR.
I have yet to come up with any system settings that specify this. The only I see is to turn DRL's on and off.

I've not aware of any sensitivity or 'delay' adjustment for auto-switching of the lights on any of the touch screens, not in the SDD options.

AFAIK the only delay on lights that's adjustable is the time the dip beams will stay on at night after the ignition key is removed.

Thats the only adjustment I was aware of. I was really just wondering why they are so damn finicky, and if that is in fact normal operation.

The most frustrating thing is they are quick to turn on (<2 seconds of low light required) but take another 60 seconds or so to turn off. Why cant the delay before they turn on be more??

Sorry, my bad. I was thinking of the auto lamp function which is just a delay once the ignition is off.

They are very on-'n'-off I'm afraid. I gave up using auto-lights very early on.

Same here, I gave up auto lights in this car. The other thing that irks me is that the lights don't come on with the wipers in auto mode, even though the owner's manual says they should.

It's a shame because all my GM vehicles stay set to automatic lights with no issues.

I too gave up the auto light feature. They would just turn on and off way too much during my commute (passing underneath several bridges and overpasses).

Fortunately I do not have any of the above problems.

The chances are it's the sensor IMO which is located on the top of the dash

If you have the time and the inclination you could remove it and replace it possibly

with an used one.

There are a couple of problems with that:

The thing is clipped in and could be very brittle because of where it is situated on the top of the dash.

The wire is very short. Tie some string to it before disconnecting.

I can post some photos if anyone needs more info.

BTW I had a play with mine when the sat nav screen was slow to change.

I bought a spare sensor but decided not to install it because the spare was very brittle and I did not

want to damage mine because of where it was situated.

The auto lights in my Austin Healey don't work at all!

Your auto lights do work in your Austin Healey. Its an advanced electrical system called "Lucas"! Oh wait, that system just turns the lights off at night at 50 mph.

Thanks for everyone assuring me I am not alone in my frustration.
At least I was able to fix my auto wipers (Headliner repair guy left it unplugged)
