Audio gremlins
Now that the new to me 2006 VDP has arrived, I have started to check for issues. There is only sound coming from the right speaker near the windshield, nothing from rear or left and the balance and fade corresponds. In other words, moving balance to the left or rear just means no sound. Maybe disconnect the battery and hope it reboots? I dont know where fuses and such are located but there is a box to the rear of the battery. The car came with no manual except for the touchscreen and etc.

The speakers are prone to breaking. I have the alpine sound system in mine and I have had to replace both windscreen speakers as the wires had snapped on both. I have also had to repair or replace 3 door speakers for the same issue. The front speakers will be easy to check, the grill is a push fit so can be gently prised off and 2 torx screws hold the speaker in place. It will be obvious if it is broken.

Yes this is VERY common and read up on the jumper repair. I had 7 out of 12 speakers not working in a 2008 XJ.
Only got 2 working with the jumper repair BUT there are a ton of used ones on EBay just make sure they check them with a meter before shipping.
I did replace the rear deck sub-woofers with after market and got much improved bass.

3 of my 4 main door speakers were not working and were fixed in this way!
And here (courtesy of Henry Crun) is how to get your door card off:
