Before I dig much deeper into my 04 XJ8, I wanted to see if the forum could offer suggestions from experience.


The memory positioning of the steering wheel has stopped working and the manual adjust is no longer a smooth movement, but is in short increments. The steering wheel no longer moves after entering the car. Sometimes I can hear the motor click and try but no more than that.


Sometimes, the steering wheel won't move at all when trying to adjust.


I replaced the control switch this morning and after fiddling with it, the memory function and the smooth steering wheel adjust returned. I thought 'VICTORY!' but the joy was very short lived. The memory function movement and the manual adjust quit completely.


After more fiddling and verifying wire continuity from mid harness to the control switch, I was again able to manually adjust the steering wheel position but only in short increments for each press of the control switch.


Can someone point me in the right direction as to potential causes of this problem?

Using a WDS, I ran tests on the Tilt and Reach steering column functions. Both tests failed and reported that the potentiometer was electrically open. So, most likely the linear potentiometer located on the belly of the steering column is worn out.

I have started searching but have not been able to find the linear potentiometer as a replacement part. Buying a used steering column could just provide another worn out potentiometer, so I would prefer buying a new one.

Does anyone know of a source for this part?
