Default Auto Dip on Passenger Mirror

I've just replaced the door mirrors on my 350 because some low life decided it would be fine to smash both sides off and completely wreck them a few nights ago.

With the replacement mirrors on, they move and auto-fold fine. However, the passenger one is not now dipping when reverse is selected. Is this because the car has somehow lost its setting whilst I've been driving for a few days with the old mirrors removed? Or are there really some 350 mirrors that don't dip? If it's a setting, presumably my dealer could programme it back again?

Any thoughts gratefully received

Paul

Paul,

I'm sorry to hear about the vandalism to your car. That really stinks.

See the section "Mirror Dip When Reversing" in the lower right corner of page 47 in the Owners Manual pdf attached. It states that the mirror dip feature is not normally programmed but that the dealer can reprogram the mirror to dip when the transmission is in Reverse. If you have access to a JLR SDD setup you can reprogram the system yourself. If I recall, it's listed under the Service Functions. I assume that for some reason your programming was lost when you changed mirrors. Did you disconnect the battery when you swapped the mirrors? That might have done it, but I'm not sure.

Cheers,

Don

Paul, I have a 2004 X350 with the auto dip function. My battery has been disconnected no less than 5 times this year, sometimes for days at a time, and the dip function has never been lost.... Brandon

This might be obvious, but if you're select mirror switch is in the passenger side position (selecting the passenger side mirror), it won't dip. At least not on mine, nor on any of my other cars which have the auto dip mirror feature.

I'm sorry if this is response is like the tech support guys asking if you have the computer plugged in...

Hi anindyam,

On our BMW, if you have the mirror-select switch set for the passenger mirror (or maybe the driver mirror - it's one or the other ), the passenger mirror will dip when in Reverse.

But in our '04 XJR, the passenger mirror dips in Reverse regardless of which position the mirror selection switch is in. I just tried it with the switch in the Passenger, Driver and Middle positions and the passenger side mirror dips in all three positions.

Next time I'm using SDD I'll try to remember to look for a programming option that behaves the way you describe. I'd really prefer to be able to choose from the driver's seat whether the passenger mirror dips or not - in some circumstances you really don't want it to dip.

Cheers,

Don

Thank you to everyone for their suggestions.

In trying different adjustments, my problem may be related to something that I have now found. My mirrors can be adjusted in all directions. But the passenger mirror does not adjust the up/down plane when the memory button is used to move the mirror back to a pre-set position. The drivers mirror re-adjusts fine, but the passenger mirror will only reset the horizontal plane. I'm confused by this. The vertical plane can be adjusted fine via the switch which indicates to me that the switch, wiring plug and motor is fine. But the memory reset button doesn't activate the vertical plane on that mirror. That seems to be imply ecu output fault (or maybe an ecu input fault when the memory is setup).

So, I'm not quite sure where to go next on this. I'll get the dealer to reset the dip function, but I'm not sure it's going to cure the problem.

Paul
