Automatic wipers. 2005 XJ8 VDP

It says in the owner's manual that my car has rain sensing wipers but, with the wipers in Auto, when it rains they don't come on. Anybody know the cure for this?

Make sure that you push the stalk up to the second detent. The bottom detent is "Off".
