Default Bad oil leak solved

I don't want to start a debate on the type or quality of oil filters here, but thought I would pass along my recent experience with a huge oil leak.
Yesterday my '04 XJR left a spot on my garage floor about the size of a basketball. With the plate on the bottom of the car I couldn't tell where it was coming from, but could tell it was engine oil. So, since I had already been to the dealer and purchased an oil filter, and with the correct oil in hand, I took the car to my independent tech and expected the worst.
With in about 3 hours he called and said everything was done. The source of the leak was the seal on the old filter. Now this was the filter that was on the car when I purchased it. The seller had told me he had just had the service done. Turns out is was a generic filter of unknown origin. I asked the tech if the filter was loose, but he said it was tight, just a faulty seal. Really glad that was it thinking I would have never got the car shut done quick enough if the filter had spun off. Even though I have always used a brand name filter, this sure drove the point home for me.
So for $40 he changed the oil and cleaned the underside of the car and washed out the pan. Priceless!!
Just thought I would pass the experience along.

Thanks for the feed back. A puddle of oil under a Jag can really jump-start the old "pucker factor".

The very idea that somebody would install a generic oil filter in a Jag is blasphemous.

That happened to another member recently in the UK. Except he was at speed and it cost him an engine.

And who manufactures them?

There are now only a handful, less a thumb, of actual manufacturers. All others are just brand names.

Awhile back, I reported that I had found that Purolator Classic filters did not seat correctly on the 4.2 engines, with the metal center part contacting the filter housing before the seal was tight, causing a leak. Every one of these filters I used was found leaking at change time, not bad, but still a leak.

WOW! That was exactly what was on my XJR, a purolator. I do think there are probably only a handful of manufacturers left. I don't know who makes the OEM for Jaguar, but thats all I buy. My dealer charges $24.95 for one, and I'm sure I'm getting screwed, but since I don't put a lot of miles on the car, I guess I'm ok. By the time I pay freight, I'm probably sixes!

I use Motorcraft filters made by Ford Motor Company. They consistently rated high in objective testing some years ago so I stuck with them. That and the fact they are carried by my local Advance Auto at popular prices, as we say.

I do 10,000 miles with Mobile1 between changes so only the best will do.

Default oil filter

I was using Pure One's but the shell is too thin it has a tendency to twist.
Am now using Beck Arnley bought from Advance auto they're oem.
cost about $17.

Apparently they are not manufactured in house. However, they are reputed to be good filters.

On the question of filter seals blowing or filters coming undone, and *then* the seal blowing, there *may* be a contributing factor.

The thread is 1-12 on the adapter for the V8. That seems to be on the coarse side as compared to other filters. Each rotation loosens or tightens the seal more than a finer thread. A 12 thread per inch of course will loosen the seal 1/12" per rotation.

Of course, solving this would require the fitting of a new adapter fitting that matched the thread on the engine and matches a finer thread on a substitute oil filter with the same seal diameter. Or, a remote oil filter kit.

Since I stopped using Purolator, I switched to Motocraft 2021. They fit right and are very well made. I have had no further problems. I have used OEM, Bosch and Mann, all are fine.
