Unhappy Bang ..... scraping ..... and almost lost a heat shield

Hi all,

Well the car has now decided to give me another problem to fix along with trying to work out what my engine vibration is under load.

There I was, minding my own business, relaxing on the drive home from work and then heard a bang, bang, bang, scrape, scrape scrape noise, especially when I went over a bump in the road.

The noise was coming from the back of the car so I knew roughly where to look.

Found one of my rear silencer heat shields just hanging off almost touching the ground.

I knew it would be the hole had got larger than what was securing it in place. I thought that a simple bolt would be holding it in place and I'd just remove the bolt and put a wide washer in place to save having to replace the whole shield.

But to my surprise the rear of the heat shield is held in place by a large pop rivet instead

My Jaguar dealer confirmed it is a rivet and that they can provide me with a new heat shield and rivet for £89 + VAT + £4.00 for the rivet

So this weekend, I know what I am going to be doing.

I think the shield has also come away from above the silencer as I think it should also be bolted above there as just held in place at the bottom does not seem to hold it in place securely enough.

Thanks,

Chris
