For those who have replaced their water pumps, which brand did you choose? Does it matter? I saw lots of threads about replacing them, but very few mentioned with which brand.
I haven't done this job yet on our X350 so I'm curious to see what replies you receive.
I do know that Behr and Airtex have both been Jaguar waterpump OEMs (Airtex during the Ford years), so you would probably be fine with either of those brands.
The X308 owners have had lots of discussions about converting from plastic impellers to metal (and whether stamped or cast metal is better, or whether the good plastic ones are better than metal). Here's an example:
From a quick look at RockAuto, the Airtex pump is very affordable (USD $35), but whether the impeller is plastic or metal is not disclosed (nor is it for any of the other brands). Another question would be whether it comes with the correct gasket or if that would have to be ordered separately.

I bought the AC Delco water pump for my 2001 XJ8 (x308) because it's the only one I found that came with the proper metal/rubber gasket. It also got good reviews on Amazon.com.
I checked, and it appears the x350 (4.2) takes the exact same water pump. Good to know since my wife's car is a 2004 XJ8 and I haven't replaced the water pump yet.
Long story short, the AC Delco pump has been on my 2001 for about 4 months now and hasn't leaked a drop. The pulley spins smooth and engine runs at the proper temperature (as least as close as I can tell with that barely helpful temp gauge).
Based on that, when I DO replace the water pump on my wife's car, it will be with another AC Delco 252-800.

Yes, I saw that but no Pep Boys in my area carries that unfortunately. I've gone ahead and ordered an Airtex from Rockauto. I believe it has a plastic impeller, the same as the OEM one, which has lasted nearly 150k miles...so the plastic impellers can't be THAT bad.

I just took a peek at the EPC and jaguarmerriamparts.com and all the part numbers for both the X350 and X308 waterpumps supersede to AJ88912.
Since Jim Lombardi demonstrated in the X308 forum that the service replacement waterpumps from Jaguar were made by Airtex, I think we can safely assume Airtex was at least one of the OEMs of the X350 pumps as well.
Cross-referencing the Airtex part number AW4124 at airtexwaterpumps.com, the same pump fits the Jaguar S-Type (00-08), XJ8/XJR (98-09), XK8/XKR (97-09) and XF (09-10), and it also fits several Land Rovers/Range Rovers, and, surprise, surprise, the Ford Thunderbird and Lincoln LS.

The use of plastic impellers are due to the OAT specified coolant. Without anti-cavitation protection, plastic impellers are used. Metal bladed impellers require protection which OAT coolant does not provide.
BOX is correct. I am an X308 owner, and the AC Delco unit only lasted me a year before the impeller crumbled into pieces.
For the X308, Jaguar had a TSB to use their upgraded water pump with a WHITE impeller. It's not plastic, but not metal either. These are much stronger than plastic.
The price I paid for the pump at the dealer was not bad at all. The dealer will give you the "latest" upgraded water pump, like they did with my X308. This is not a part I would go cheap on
Jim has confirmed that for the X308, the latest Jaguar water pump is made by Airtex (an OEM to Ford, GM, Chrysler, Toyota and others). Since the Jaguar part number is the same for all XJ8s/XJRs from '98 to '09, it is probably safe to assume that the Airtex pump is what Jaguar is currently supplying for the X350 as well.
The Airtex pump is very affordable at RockAuto, but the X308 members report that it comes with a paper gasket rather than the OE metal/rubber gasket, so some X308 owners have just reused the original gasket with some added RTV sealant. The OE gasket is available from Jaguar but it costs nearly as much as the pump does from RockAuto. See the photo in this post from ebrewer, which seems to indicate that the pumps Jaguar is supplying also now come with a paper gasket:
To add even more confusion to the mix looks like the Airtex AW4124 pump might have switched to a black coloured impeller. Still has 6 fins like the white impeller models but the metal appears to be slightly thinner.
Just ordered it from RockAuto. Box says made in China. It came with a little notice in the box about a TSB. But the image in the TSB for the "new" design has the white impeller
I've owned my '06 XJ from 50k miles, and this is the first time I'm replacing the pump (80k miles now). The pump I removed from the car appears to be an A1 Cardone remanufactured model so I'm guessing it was replaced at some point before 50k miles. The old pump appears to have been leaking from its own sandwich gasket. If we were in soviet russia, I would have just cleaned it up and put a new gasket inbetween the halves and called it a day.
I purchased last year all new hoses and tree as well as water pump. The Airtex 4124 had a Jaguar sticker denoting part number replacements and supersedes with black plastic impeller. (yes, it does have the 2 small holes) The cast body of the pump mating to the block is not machined, and will require the provided paper gasket. Using the rubberized metal OE gasket on non-machines surfaces is not recommended. You should use a spray gasket sealant like Permatex High Tack and not RTV. The pump is engineered and manufactured in Spain.

Yes this was something I had realized as well as another difference. No manufacture markings on the body itself. How did you find out it was made in Spain?
Also do you think Blue Hylomar is fine to use? I have lots of it lying around.

From the packaging itself, and contact with Airtex. A spray elastomer should be used with the paper gasket, like Permatex High Tack. The elastomer/resin is absorbed by the paper itself, where RTV will only reside on it's surface. You also really don't want what small beads of RTV squeezed out from the assembly internally to be drawn into the cooling system and floating around. If you examine the body of the pump, you'll see elastomers were used on the paper gasket between the halves. The gasket provided is not impregnated with elastomers and should be used when joining parts containing fluids like antifreeze. A can is only a couple of dollars at your local parts store.
As far as I can tell Permatex High Tack is not a spray. Its brushed on. There is a High Tack "Spray-A-Gasket" that is in an aerosol can. Are you referring to this?
Whatever they use in the sandwich gasket doesn't seem to be very good as that appears to be the most common failure point on replaced updated water pumps as shown by several people on this forum. It was also the failure point for my Cardone water pump.
Blue Hylomar is not a silicone sealant. At least not according to the Hylomar website.
A lot of people fit these things dry and the instructions don't call for any sealant. So I guess adding anything else to the mix, as long as you don't go mental, should be fine.
