First thing take the bulb out of the boot light.
If the rest of the central locking is working then it is not the fuse.
It is possible (but not likely IMO) that there is a break in a wire where it bends when you close the boot lid.
In the boot lid you have a small electric motor and three microswitches.
I think this is accessed via the black plastic around the latch on the lid.
Possible faulty microswich or motor.
BTW this post applies to an XJ, S type might be similar.
Let us know how you get on.

HI Meirion,
Thank you so much for your thread.
Taking the bulbs out would seem to be a no brainer, but I hadn't thought of it, having put the car on charge over night.
I levered off the black plastic lock cover - one little lug on each side, then took off the large cover containing the boot lid light, held in by a 8mm bolt each side, hidden by a plastic cover (one missing).
I could then see the lock mechanism move slightly when pushing the remote.
So no electrical problem.
The lock is held in with two hex bolts. As it comes out you need to fiddle it through the hole then it just unplugs.
It was a bit dirty, so I cleaned it up with WD14. There is a cream coloured plastic lever that sticks out on the rear facing side of the lock. This can is the manual lever (which could be linked to a cable) and seemed to be sticking to the lock casing. A bit more WD everywhere, then a bit more and it suddenly came free.
Working like a nicely oiled pistol, I connected it back to the car and using a screw driver to push the latch closed, activated it several times with no problem.
I tried connecting a plastic tie to the lever (as seen in the article about x type boot locks) but this seemed to snag, so I left it out. I put it back in and tested it several times before putting back all the trim.
I have a few pictures if any one wants to see them.
As I was on a roll, I then took out the trim in my '99 XK8 and thanks to the WD40, got the key mechanism working (more pics).
Thanks to everyone who adds threads - we must all be saving a fortune in garage bills and a special thank you to Meirion.
