Default Brake Rotors

I guess there are two types of front brakes on the '04 XJ8 - does anyone know how to tell them apart ? I just want to replace rotors and pads

There are 3 pads listed (10/2009)
C2C15990 supercession
C2C20686 supercession
C2C23786

Not sure what the supersession means (whether the 2 suspercession numbers are superceeded to C2C23786 or whether there are 3 current numbers the latest supercessions of which are listed for the initail 2 numbers)

I would go with after market ceramics on the pads. No brake dust. I used Brake Pads:
Front: AKEBONO Part # EUR1065
Rear: AKEBONO Part # EUR806

Got them from www.RockAuto.com

Brake rotors:
Front Rotors: POEF06471 - 120.61077
Rear Rotors: POER06471 - 120.61062

From www.r1concepts.com

Agree about using the aftermarket pads (assuming the part numbers in the last post are the same as your car) but I would go for the better EBC redstuff

I have ceramics on all my cars, and always recommend them...Ditto about the dust, performance....do it!

I actually just ordered pads and rotors all around for my 05 L from AutoAnything.com. I went with centric premium rotors, EBC Redstuff pads up front, and a set of decent pads for out back. The grand total with shipping was only $368, so I was quite happy. I can get you the exact part numbers if you'd like.

Looks like there are plenty of us changing our own pads/rotors...I will be doing this soon on my 2006 VDP.

I remember reading somewhere that there is a special tool required to compress the pistons in the rear caliper.

Can anyone confirm this?

The OEM rotors are really well nice looking and not much if any more cost than the better aftermarket rotors.

The Akebono pads are great. Very little dust and very little stopping power compromise.

I am at 44K on my 2005 VDP and soon will need to do my brakes.

I am also interested in learning about the special tools/process to do the rear ones. What's so special?

It's been a couple of months since you posed the question of the special tool. Did you ever get a response? I'm thinking of doing a brake change also.

Correct. I purchased the kit in the link above and used it to change the rear pads...worked perfectly. The kit will come in handy for future work on other makes as well.

Do believe the issue is the rear caliper piston screws in on the base models. My 04 XJR didn't, but I think the emergency caliper does.

Default 06 brakes

Ken, I just acquired an 06 XJ8 that just had the rear brakes done. The shop replaced the rotors which I thought was unusual given my experience with working on cars. Did you do thye brake son your 06?
