Question Buying 04 XJR-S

Hello,

I am looking to buy a 2004 XJR-S.

The car has 104k miles with 4 previous owners.

Anything in particular I should be looking at or concerned with?

Thank you, Alex

Looks nice, key word service history, service history! A big heap of receipts would be great. Air suspension is not leaking car should be level and corner well, get trans up to full temp on a road test and make sure the car does not hunt for gears. The car needs to of had plenty of oil changes and diff oil changes so again look at documents. Also make sure the body is straight as you cannot repair Aluminum easy it costs a small fortune so no body damage. How much is it up for? The wheels look after market?

Yep see that know from the side view. I paid $12500 for mine so good price, seems to be some confusion about the XJR-S model my title says that and when you search that model pictures of the car come up and there is a vin designation for XJR-S but most guys on here say no such car it's a standard XJR with 20's but there are small deferences. Good luck with the car.

Question

Robert,

Is there a difference between a "XJR-S" and an "XJR"?

Can't find much some interior trim and I think the suspension settings may be different and next to an XJR they just look a bit more bad ***!

The early XJR's suffered from a chirping supercharger belt. There was a re-designed belt available which was fitted from 2006/07. You can tell if this is fitted as the upgraded belt was grooved on both sides.

I'd love to see a better answer to this question. My insurance company insists (of course) that I have an XJR-S, so I really would like to know what constitutes the "S" designation.

Thanks in advance.

This is the only VIN listing I am aware of for the X350 and I can't see any mention of an XJR-S:

PREFIX 6 & 7
Body Code
71 = 4-door 5 seat - XJ
72 = 4-door 5 seat - SE
73 = 4-door 5 seat - XJR/Sport
74 = 4 door 5 seat - VDP/SV8
75 = 4 door 4 seat - XJ
76 = 4-door 4 seat - SE
77 = 4-door 4 seat - XJR/Sport
78 = 4 door 4 seat - VDP/SV8
79 = LWB 4-door 5 seat - XJ
80 = LWB 4-door 5 seat - SE
81 = LWB 4-door 5 seat - XJR/Sport
82 = LWB 4 door 5 seat - VDP/SV8
83 = LWB 4 door 4 seat - XJ
84 = LWB 4-door 4 seat - SE
85 = LWB 4-door 4 seat - XJR/Sport
86 = LWB 4 door 4 seat - VDP/SV8
87 = 4-door 5 seat - Sovereign
88 = 4-door 4 seat - Sovereign
89 = LWB 4-door 5 seat - Sovereign
90 = LWB 4-door 4 seat - Sovereign

A quick Google uncovers a number of X350's being described as an XJR-S but they look like XJR's to me and that is what their VIN translates to. There also doesn't seem to be a common spec, some have 19" wheels and some 20"

It may be a local dealer branded special but the only factory produced XJR-S I am aware of is the one based on the XJS.

The car I just purchased came with the original window sticker that designates it as a 2004 XJR. The Carfax says it is an XJR-S. Just fyi as it sure doesn't look any different then any other XJR that I have seen.

I just can't say enough good things about this model though. The power, cornering, full size car visibility, and perfect seat fit make this a car I plan to be addicted to. I plan to keep my eye on this market just in case a newer version makes itself available in my area.

cheers, Doug

P.S. after writing this I happened to notice that the post above that lists body desgnations says that body code 73 is in fact an XJR Sport. My cars body code is 73 so I guess it is an XJR Sport (whatever significance that may have is beyond me).

Thinking of buying the E55 AMG, or just stick with the mighty xjr? Your thoughts guys?

I also have a 2004 XJR-S. Not sure what the S stands for but I really do love the car. Mine had 60K on the odometer when I got it. It came with 20 inch sepangs as well. I think $13K is a bit high for a car with over 100K miles on it. I would be concerned about the electronics, air suspension,odd noise, leaks, engine oil, transmission, radiator overflow tank, just to name a few. I echo the concerns about transmission response. Good luck, you may have found a good one!

I just paid 13 for a near perfect 2004 XJR-S with all services fulfilled on time and up to date at Jaguar. Even the struts have already been replaced. It has 70000 miles, a clean Carfax, books, window sticker in glove box. Options are nav, park sensors forward, headlamp washer, and warm weather pack.

Monday will add the clear bra since the nose is so clean I want to keep it that way. Just ordered side badges and trunk button cap since these pieces are showing some age.

These XJR's are great cars. I'll be a sucker for an '08 or '09 at some point.

Where are you getting your Trunk button cap from? That has the growler on it yes? I need one but Jag only sells the whole assembly.

hello smoothy,

an old post, i know, however i am looking (long distance) at a '04 xjr with the same "73" designation..the code page calls them a "5 seater".
how would the 5 seater be any different? does it have three headrest in the back seat or is the fold down arm rest gone ?
another interesting thing i have yet to see on any other xjr i've shopped is a red welting on the seat bottoms...odd to me...
your thoughts and help is appreciated.

many thx,

max

To help answer the original question from 2012, my understanding is the XJR-S is the same vehicle as an XJR , but with all options added...including rear-view mirror compass, rear entertainment package, navigation, front sensors and headlight spray nozzles...options that were optional on the XJR.

Example: my 2005 XJR does not have the above options except navigation. I'm actually happy i don't have front parking sensors or the spray nozzles as they break up the front end look. Plus, without a front plate in NC, the front area looks clean.

A known issue on 2004s was "hunting" at steady road speed in the transmission. The torque converter lock-up would lock, unlock, lock, unlock, forever. You'd see the tach change up and down 200 RPM at a time. I drove a nice 2004 that did that, and it was a deal-breaker. The 2007 I found a week later was a better-equipped car, anyway!

As for 5-seater, there were Jags sold as 4-seaters, with an actual console in the back seat center, not just the fold-down armrest box.
