Default Buying 2006 XJ Super V8

Hi all. On Tuesday, I'm picking up my 2006 XJ Super V8 from a very reputable dealer. So excited!! Black outside, cream interior. 1 owner no accident on the carfax. Lots of maintenance records. It has 72K miles on the clock. I'm just wondering if you all could tell me if I'm making a good choice, and what things are known to be issues with this year/model. Thank you very much!!

Congrats on the new purchase! Have a look at the sticky at the top of this section

I suggest you also look out for shop windows on the side of the road so you can look at yourself in the reflection.

It's a super car.

Brake disks are about due for replacement though. Wishbone bushes too. An indie will change them cheaper than a dealer. If you have 20" wheels one or more might have a dent on the inner rim. Watch the coolant level in case of leaks. You might find the self-folding mirrors don't. Just needs clean and lube. Rear sunblind sticks. Look at your cabin air filter to see if it is full of leaves and dirt. When you need new brake pads ask on here for low-dust red brands in your market. When you wash it, look for blisters in the paint esp. near edges and joints in the body.

Spend some time on the seat and controls memory settings.

Polish the engine.

In the service records, it was indicated the front and rear rotors and pads were replaced around 30K and 60K. And the control arms were replaced as well around 60k, as was the thermostat. Coolant reservoir was replaced around 30k

All good news!

Look out for a leak round the water pump though.

It can be interesting to have a look underneath when it is hoisted and the tray is off.

Default Wow

So first day driving around in my 06 super 8.. Wow!! I have never experienced power like that in a sedan, let alone a limo-like one. It's truly unbelievable. However, the engine light came on, and I pulled codes of p0171 and p0174. Both related to a vacuum leak most likely from what I've read..well I messed around in the engine looking at hoses and whatnot, and the oil dipstick was not pushed all the way in. Not sealed at all.. I corrected that, erased the code, and it hasn't come back since. Could that have been the issue?? I've heard even something that simple can trigger the light, because it's connected with other hoses or something like that. Your opinions?

Be sure to check the age of the battery, these cars do not like old batteries.
What I found with My 05 is Do Not Use lower octane fuel, it likes the 93 and shuts down to "Limp Mode" if 87 goes in. Others have had good luck running the 87, just not me. Figured out the octane issue and running like a champ ever since.

Default Life expectancy

Another question for you all. My Super 8 has 73k on it. How many miles do you think I can get out of the transmission and the motor before they would need to be rebuilt/replaced? Of course doing all the regular maitinence and preventative care. I mean, can this motor and tranny do 150k and more?

The editor of the UK Jaguar Enthusiasts Club magazine has a 2003 X350 V8 and it's now on over 200,000 miles on original engine. Other people in Europe have cars with equivalent mileages. His gearbox was replaced under warranty shortly after purchase in 2004. Basically, the cars can run the marathon, but tend to need a fair few repairs over the years on parts that one expects to wear out some time, just not as quickly as they actually do !

my 2003 X350 3.5 V8 went past 200000 miles a couple of weeks ago, I had the gearbox reflashed and that was about 100000 miles ago, smooth changes ever since

Question.. I use cruise control a lot. Recently I was noticing that only the button to increase or set the speed is working. The "minus" sign one to decrease speed doesn't do anything. However, when the headlamps are OFF, it works again! Why would that one button not work when the headlights are on? Any idea what that could be?
