There are some owners who are plain unlucky with a used Jaguar and if you cannot do maintenance work yourself
you need to be able to afford to pay someone else to do it and hopefully not a Jaguar dealer.

As I said I bought my car at 99,000 miles. I have only added 6k+ these last two years and have had no serious issues whatsoever.

I do my own preventive maintenance including a complete transmission flush not just an empty of 6 quarts or so but a flush of 10.53 quarts.

Also valley hose replacement before it went.

I would love to buy another Jaguar but have decided on a Used Range Rover
Sport SC in a few months because I need to tow a heavy boat and my Dodge Dakota V8 is not up to it.

I am sure my shocks will go sometime and hope to have some sort of warning but I will re-place with CATS compliant units when I do.

You have "air suspension fault" you do not have "vehicle too low".

If you read the codes and get c2303 then the chances are it is the compressor

seal.

Easy fix.

(well as long as you have 3 hands!) LOL

My 2 cents.... I bought an 05 XJ8L for $10,500 (103,000 miles). 8 minutes later totaled it! Insurance paid off loan, I got $2000 because it was worth $2000 more than I paid. Bought an 05 Super V/8 for $10500 ( 102,000 miles) had it 2 months and a police car hit it. Insurance paid off loan and gave me $4500 to settle the $15800 valuation. I just bought an 05 XK8 for $9900.(90,000 miles) So far these cars having depreciated value on the retail market has benefitted me. The appeal on the XK8 is the non air bag suspension.

Cool Happened to me

When I test drove a 2004 XJ8. Dealer made repair as condition of sale along with new brakes as brake pedal was soft on test drive. 47K on clock. Picked it up October 2015. Problem free since.

Unfortunately, I did not mention this to the dealer (pretty stupid of me, I know). I have looked at the Air Suspension thread in this forum but since I do not own the car I cannot properly use the methods described to determine whether the message is just a glitch due to a low battery charge or if the issue is as serious as replacing an air compressor or some shocks, which, according to the thread, can cost upwards of $3000 (which is an insane price if the whole car is worth not much more than $10 or $11K). This honestly feels like a punch in the stomach because an "R" model Jaguar has always been a bit of a dream car for me. The dealer has offered different types of extended warranty and I am fine buying the car if this air suspension issue can be covered by it or if the fix is no more than $600 or $700 and can be prolonged by a couple months. I have looked into replacing the air suspension shocks with these coils (https://www.arnottindustries.com/par...36_gid694.html) but would like to avoid that if possible. Any suggestions on what to do?

After looking into the vehicle history I don't think the car had its proper 60K mile service. This is what the CarFax says was done to the car at 60K:

Air filter replaced
Airbag system checked
Oil and filter changed
Emissions inspection performed

Besides these things, what else is supposed to be done at the 60K mile service for XJR's? I've heard that transmission fluid needs to be changed as well. Also, how much does a 60K service usually cost for these cars?

Default Service Schedule

Service Schedule. 99% sure the transmission fluid will not have been changed.

I simpathzie with the above post by catsgame +1.

I had a 03 S type R which was replaced by my current DD a 06 Super 8 XJ. I love everything about these classic design beauties down to the smell of the leather hides, except for the expensive and frequent repairs/maintenance.
On both these Jags I purchased a bumper to bumper extended warranty. I have had the Super 8 for just 2 years and have racked up no less than $5K in repairs at the Dealer. I paid a little ovet $5k for the warranty. I bet the selling Dealer thought he was ripping me off on the price, but I knew I would be getting the last laugh.
Don't consider owning these cars without a warranty. They are extremely expensive to maintain/repair in a proper manner.

Thank you for all of this information. Tomorrow I plan on going to the dealer and finalizing things. I will post later about what happens.

Essentially, you only need a warranty for the expensive things. The car is a 2004 so any "covers everything" warranty is going to cost a lot of money. Is it worth it ?

In order to get a warranty you need an inspection. Eveything must be in good working order. Also, the warranty excludes pre existing conditions. You can't fool them because they often send an inspector to verify the repairs before they authorize the work.

my 04 xjr I bought still runs strong with 194k on it zero blowby , not smoke out exhaust, idles very smooth, even the compression on the cylinders are still almost at new numbers, but with that said i also have every receipt since new on it totaling over 15k in repairs and every maintenance jaguar recommends has been completed within 500 miles of the recommended intervals

Default Found Another XJR

Well, I've decided not to get the 61K mile XJR. The dealer was unwilling to let the car go to a shop of my choosing for inspection. However, I have found another 2004 XJR that is a bit further from me. It is another one-owner car and it has 77K miles. And unlike the other car, the CarFax does show a 30,000 mile service performed as well as a 40,000 mile service. As for the air suspension, I'm planning on keeping the air suspension until an issue pops up. If the issue requires a new compressor, then I would most likely just get a new compressor. If, however, one or more shocks need to be replaced, then I will just go for an Arnott Coil conversion.

Before you purchase get a pre purchase inspection and read for any OBD II DTCs.
Good luck.

If that vehicle is being laundered through a dealer, an air suspension problem may be the primary reason why the car is being peddled. Even worse, the car could be saddled with electrical/safety issues. Whatever the case, it's always buyer beware, and virtually no one is unloading used vehicles these days because they're working.

Don't buys these cars unless you have a few grand in the bank for repairs and maintenance. If neglected or deferred, one may be sacraficing the ride comfort of these fine automobiles.
