Default "Cannot apply park brake" warning message

Following replacement of new rear brake discs, pads and brand new brake calipers on my 2006 Daimler super eight, the above warning message appeared along with the red brake warning light. I followed the procedure to recalibrate the EPB - disconnected the battery for 30 secs, got the "apply foot and park brake" message indicating it was in calibration mode, started engine, pressed brake pedal firmly five times, then applied parking brake switch whilst pressing the brake pedal lightly. However, nothing happens. The EPB doesn't come on and the warning message and light persists.
can anybody enlighten me as to what I'm doing wrong? Or is there another thing to check? Could it still be air present in the brake caliper pistons following replacement of the new units? I thought they had been successfully bled but perhaps not.. Would it help checking for fault codes or using SDD software to fault find?

grateful for any pointers as to where to go from here.
