Car Shield

Car Shield
Hi,
I'm wondering if any of you use or have used Car Shield. If so, what level protection plan do you have? Any positive or negative thoughts?
I was quoted $164.99 a month for Platinum level coverage. $100 deductible. No limit to mileage - fixed rate.
My 2004 VDP had 71000 miles, is still dealer serviced, and has never had any major problems. This seems like a good insurance policy against coming major breakdowns.
What say you?

I did buy a 3yr mechanical warranty when I purchased my car, expires this year. Not Car Shield, different country.
I'm always skeptical of these "insurance" schemes, though it seemed sensible at the time. Whilst the dealer had his bottom price, he DID offer me "cost price" on the warranty and it must have been, given it was $NZ1500 for 3 years..($US400 P.A. or something)
I have not made a claim. But someone else in the Jag club claimed they had their air suspension replaced under their mechanical warranty. Now you are all gonna come flocking to NZ...
--------
So his question might have been better phrased "WHO does a good mechanical warranty, if any?"
(Unfortunately for the global motor industry, this forum if full of paupers who do it themselves. How'm I doing?? )

The previous owner of my 2004 Vanden Plas took out a 5year/100,000km repair insurance package, cost was one payment of $3600 Can. The car was about 4 years and 34000kms old at the time. I bought the car a year after the insurance package had expired and it cam with approximately $14000 Can repair receipts covered by the insurance and another $3000 Can in repairs after the expiry.
I have spent about $1300Can in parts since I bought it Nov 2014. Car has not been in a shop since.

When I worked at the dealer many customers had the 'auto-repair-insurance' policies. It seemed the scam was that the company would startup and be in business for 2 to 3 years and then when the claims started coming in at a certain rate, they would 'file for bankruptcy protection' or just go out of business.
I guess the same people would just start a new company, 'lather, rinse, repeat'.
They would try to deny as many claims as they could.
I remember a customer came in and had a car repair claim for a repair that was covered by the auto repair insurance but I noticed that the named company went out of business.
I told the service writer and he talked to the owners of the dealership and we were told to fix the car. I asked who was paying and he said THE DEALERSHIP.
I asked why and he said that WE (the dealer) was the one that SOLD the policy on a used Jaguar.
That customer was one lucky person.

If you are completely unable to mage your own repairs on an X350... maybe it makes sense. I would pocket the $164 a month and do my own repairs with the help of the forum, but not everyone is in that situation, has the tools patience and wherewithal to do the same. In fact, I can't imagine owning one of these and relying on a dealer or repair shop. Every time I do brakes or other regular maintenance, I like to quote the dealer price for what I do. Seems I spend about 25-30% of what others would charge me. As I say each Jaguar owner is unique, with the one common theme that we love these cars. Good luck if you do go for it. I was personally shocked at what they charge after seeing the wave of commercials running lately.
I does seem pessimistic that you are betting on your car breaking in a catastrophic way, whereas they are betting it won't. Same with all maintenance contracts, such as Square Trade. I only get them on something that I know I am unlikely to be able to find parts for or fix because of complexity.

I had a different company on a Mazda. I took it in because the ac fan wouldn’t work on the middle setting. They said they would pay for the part and labor but not the diagnostics because the diagnostic time was not listed in their books. I went round and round with them and got them to pay. I think the better bet is to save the money for repairs. My grandpa once said that if you buy service contracts for thing like appliances and the like, you would be money ahead just paying to fix the one that broke. That stuck with me, food for thought.
