Default Changing ATF- drained 6 quarts, only taking 4?!?

Ive read tons of write ups about how to do this and Ive followed the steps very carefully, right down to the torque sequence of the pan, and replacing the mechatronic sleeve.
The car is perfectly level on jack stands.
I drained the pan and got 5 quarts, I blew out the trans cooler lines with compressed air and got another quart.
I begin pumping in new fluid and it starts pouring out around 3 quarts.. I started the car up to let it cycle for 15 seconds. turned it off, pumped another quart in and it starts pissing out of the fill hole again

Whats going on?? What am I doing wrong here?

Read the instructions again you need to fill while the car is running.

I didnt read the car has to be running while filling. but you are to pump fluid in (with the car off) until it starts coming out of the fill hole. Then start the car and cycle through gears.. then check the fill plug to see if any fluid comes out.

I followed the steps in this video from ZF. it doesnt mention doing initial fill with the car running.

At 5:45 in that video it says "with engine still running at idle speed remove fill plug and keep filling".

I just checked the temperature of the pan just now, and the pan was 45C! and thats with the car being off for 20-30 mins!
it was 95F (35C) outside today. so perhaps the fluid was too hot when I was attempting to fill. I suspect it may have been close to or over 50C when I was checking the fluid level.

I'll give it a go again tomorrow with the car running.. this time it'll be cold so I'll have time to watch the temperature get to 40C

edit:
For some reason I read steps where I had the impression all 6 quarts pumped in when the car was off.

Aaron, you are correct, I feel stupid now reading step 8 from the writeup you linked
"#8 Remove the fill bolt and pump in approx 3 to 4 qts before it leaks. The opening is approx ½ in diameter. I used the generic orange hand pump found at kragens or walmart. It fits and it is smaller then the opening but a bit restrictive. When I started to get fluid coming out and removed the pipe, an additional ¼ liter came out. I would suggest finding a smaller diameter hose if you are using $30-60/liter fluid. Temp insert the drain bolt and start the car and leave it running. Remove the drain bolt, fill (takes an additional 2.5 to 3 quarts) until it leaks and temp insert drain bolt. Move the car through each gear from D, R, 5, 4, 3 and back into park (ZF says just to go to gear 3). If you let the wheels spin, make sure you stop the wheels before going into park – trust me on this one."

Default We trust you

I will take your word that the brake needs to be applied prior to shifting into park.

The ZF instructions state that the emergency brake must be applied and the brake pedal depressed while shifting through the gears to prevent the rear wheels from turning during the shifting. I don't know if the primary concern is the possibility of jerking the car off of the jack stands or something to do with the transmission internals, such as immobilization of the output shaft.

Cheers,

Don

Probably also to prevent DSC from kicking in.
