Default Clock Lamp / Light Is Out / Not functioning

Greetings,

I have an '06 XJ and the lamp that illuminates the clock is out. I don't know why it isn't working. The clock is otherwise functioning.

A review of the service manual suggests replacing the light requires substantial disassembly of the console and dashboard.

My questions are:

Can the lamp for the clock be replaced or is the lamp with the clock as a sealed unit or otherwise and the clock assembly would require entire replacement?

is there access to the bulb, or clock, without dismantling the console and dashboard?

If disassembly of the console and dashboard is required, are there any other lamps that would be exposed and prudent to replace?

Thanks

Please take no offence, but you do already know that it only works when you have your lights switched on?

Hello Esray,

Not at all! The light would come on with the rest of the lights for the instruments and switchgear. Now it doesn't come on at all.

This has been mentioned on the UK forums several times. The bulb in mine packed up at one point, it was annoying but when the car went in for some other things I had them fit a new bulb. Apparently it is not too difficult but I did not get round to it as it is a bit time consuming.
I think you have to remove some of the console and then the wood around the clock and vents, then that particular unit can be lifted out to gain access to the actual bulb.

Hello,

Thanks very much!

That answers the question. The process appears time consuming though not terribly difficult.

I agree on a point posted by another, it is surprisingly inconvenient not to have the clock, effectively, after dark.

Regards and thanks to all who participated,

James

It's not difficult and as a matter of fact I have a spare NOS bulb for the clock.

I've replaced mine a while back, it's not difficult and takes about 30 mins if I remember right. I think the bulb was a bit fiddley to get in.

The dealer local to me that I deal with tells me the part, C2C 3441, is no longer available.

Does anyone know if there is a generic substitute and if so, the specifications? If so, please advise.

Well i guess i spoke out of turn here, no longer available from the dealer.
The alternative to this is needed, my dash is in pieces here.
The bulbs i had in hand (2721 MF) were believed to fit.
But they are a bit different, than the one i pulled out of the clock.

At $20.39 each, with tax included, i'll pass.
Looks like the 2721 MF's from O'Reilly's.
Might work after all, just not quite the same, will check tomorrow.
Meanwhile i have a Land Rover clock bulb ordered.
That one looks like it will be a much better fit, if its the right size.
From a vender an hour away, so it should be here in a few days.

It is a bit fiddly, but perfectly do-able. Centre Console has to come out and then all the dash wood trim. Then a few screws and a bit of wriggling to get the clock out. The biggest challenge is finding a suitable replacement. The exact replacement is no longer available. The LED ones are too bright, and the filament ones claimed to fit, don't quite fit. I eventually managed to get a clear filament one that fitted and squeezed the green cover off the old one and onto the new one. And it's great to have an illuminated clock back!
