Default Clockspring?

Recently whenever I set the cruise speed (standard cruise control) I get the message Cruise Engaged followed (anywhere from immediately to 1 minute later) by the message Cruise Cancelled. I'm suspecting this is a Clockspring issue. Everything else on the wheel controls seem to work fine. Car is a 2004 with 83,500 miles. Whats the group opinion? Can I just remove the clockspring and clean the contacts or should I just replace it.

Thanks

Possible wheel sensor or failing switch on brake pedal (very rare).
