Default Clunk and momentory loss of momentum

After years with zero issues my XJ6 auto 2003 has starting making a clunking noise which seems to be below me and is followed my a momentory loss off momentum which seems like the gear is trying to engage. It then sorts its self out is is ok. I think this just occurs shortly after starting out. Garage wasn't sure but suggested replacing the prop shaft with a second hand one. Any ideas?

I doubt if the prop shaft would drive and then not.
I would first have a look at selector brackets.

Check the fluid level. If its okay, try a reflash of the TCM. if that doesn't do it, have it looked at by an expert. I am not familiar with an XJ6 V6 as you mention. In 03 in the US, they were all V8 4.0. You mention Reading, is this in UK or Pennsylvania?

I wish I could be more helpful here but all I got is be afraid, very afraid of a garage that wants to start throwing major components at undiagnosed problems.

If the previous 2 posts don't pan out you may want to look to your motor mounts.
