Default Coil Life Expectancy?

2 years ago, I got the error for a bad coil. With help from you guys, I was able to find it & replace. In replacing the cam cover gaskets, I have all of the coils out. Would it be prudent to replace the other 7? I used the Denso coil for the replacement; is that the one you would use?

Is there a known life expectancy for the coils?

Thanks and best,

Steve S.

My Jag guy is telling me the quality of all parts has really come down over the past few years. Even the name brand parts. He did plugs and coils on my car last month (Beru coils) and already one of the coils has failed. Booked in to have it replaced (under warranty) tomorrow.

So, to answer your question: Is there a life expectancy for new coils? The safest answer is "yes." They will last as long as they last.

I wouldn't change them but if you do - keep the old ones as they'll be fine as spares for the next fail. (May even be better in case you buy cheap ones.)

Thanks for the input. I think that I won't replace at this time. My wife & I are 76 and our feet aren't as heavy as they once were, and here in Seattle, we certainly don't drive like our European friends.

Also, I've just started studying to remove the left cam cover. Aye Yae Yae! Mamma Mia!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Thanks so much, Petz. I noticed that they are heavily favored by purchase volume on one site.

I noticed that the one(Denso) I puchased a few years ago was smaller. Didn't have to bend it to get it in.

Oops, you were talking plugs, I was thinking coils. I installed your plug suggestion 30k miles ago. Really noticed a difference.

Those ngk I mentioned above are going in without a hassle because of the shorter head so no squeezing in at the strut mount area . They are also a tiny bit shorter in the tunnel to reach the sparks . Started and runs well

As far as the coil packs are concerned, I had a NAPA coil pack which didn't last more than 3 years. Personally, I wouldn't replace anything on the Jag unless I absolutely had to. I mean, you can easily open up a whole can of worms by doing such maintenance on the vehicle. As I'm sure that you're well aware, nothing is easy to service on the Jaguar including the simple replacement of light bulbs.

On any other luxury vehicle, I'd say replace them all if they're all original as if one of the coils goes out, then the others likely aren't far behind.

However, on our Jags, the coils are so easy to get to that you can probably just play whack-a-mole as each next one fails and it probably won't be too much of a hassle. When I did the valve cover gaskets on my S-Type R, I just bit the bullet and replaced all the coils with new Denso replacements as I picked up a very slight stumble/misfire at idle and wanted to get ahead of the curve and address it before it became bad enough to start throwing codes.

I've got the old ones sitting in a box in the garage as spares in case one of the new coils decides to let go (or to go in the 4.2 SC I pulled from an S-Type R I found at the local pick-and-pull), but I've been running for about a year now the the engine runs perfectly smooth.
