Config E Mode after IDS messing around
Hello, I recently got a Mongoose cable clone and was messing around with IDS to reprogram the ABS module in my 04 XJR. It gave me a message saying something fatal then CONFIG E appeared on my dash board. Tried driving after and all seemed fine the but the message persists. Really freaking out as to what I should do now!

You need at least a 30 amp regulated power supply on the battery when programming any module and I'll defer to my previous point, your rolling the dice configuring any module with a clone cable.

When they were current on the model they could have done it with their eyes closed. However even the techs that were there have only a vague memory of what to do. When a module fails to communicate there is a very specific time dependent procedure for bringing it back to life. A main dealer probably would not want to touch it. However many independents are still current enough to work through the procedure.
I have done it, just a DIYer, with the 131 SDD and the latest JLR VCI. Took a while before I got it right, but wasn't paying by the hour! 131 is actual Jag software, not a crack, that works since, if the date is set right, it thinks it is current.

FIXED. An update on this thread. Dante brought the car to my place and we worked on it there. There were a number of issues - mainly ground problems - we dealt with before starting the main fix. The last try was programming the ECM to get rid of the config-e message. It failed and the ECM was put off line. We tried the recovery procedure and it also failed. The car was dead in the garage, it was late so Dante borrowed one of our cars and went home. Next day I went over the grounds again and cleaned up the ones at the headlights. Tried a re-program with same results.
Ran tests on CAN lines. There was a ground fault on the bus. Jumped to the ABS module since I have seen the same on two others. It had the short internally in the module. They still work with the partial short but make programming the ECM fail.
Disconnected the ABS module and jumpered the connector CAN lines. Did a reprogram on the ECM and it worked when the recovery procedure was done. Config-e was eliminated and the car was functional again.
