Default Is This Coolant Correct?

So I went to the dealer to purchase coolant for my 2004 XJ8. They had the normal l liter bottle for $21 (that I normally buy) and they had another coolant for $28 for a gallon. The guy at the dealer said they were the same thing and nothing is different except the price. So I asked for the gallon of coolant for $28 and when he returned with the coolant it had the "Land Rover" markings. I asked if it really is the same because the one I normally buy says "Jaguar". He ensured me that they were still the same and he wouldnt sell me something that was not made for my car. Is this true or should I just go return the coolant? Please let me know. Thanks!

Default DexCool High Mileage

JMB,

I've been using the DexCool for about $12/gal at the local auto parts store. The orange-colored DexCool meets the required spec and has presented no problems.

Is it orange in color? Since land Rover is a sister company and uses the AJ34 enginer I would think it was the same coolant.

It doesn't matter what branding is on the container. What is important is that the coolant complies with or exceeds the requirements of the specification ESD-M97B49-A for long life coolant.

This specification information will always appear somewhere on the label, regardless of the brand.

Click on the picture attachment below to see the coolant that was given to me. Maybe this will help and you can determine if this is ok or not for a 2004 XJ8. Please let me know. Thank you.

This is from your owner's manual:

Use anti-freeze to
specification WSS M97B44, coloured
orange, Extended Life Coolant.

Dexcool type coolants meets this spec. No need to go to a dealer and pay triple or quadruple the price. Neither Jaguar nor LR manufacture their own coolant- they just have someone bottle the coolant and put their label on it.

The correct coolant for your Jaguar is OAT (Organic Acid Technology) Extended Life Coolant.

Jaguar literature gives further information that the Coolant should conform to specification WSS M97B44-D Orange or equivalent. This specification is a FORD standard reference number.

The Coolant you have been given in the Land Rover branded container is OAT and complies with ASTM D3306-00A. This is the American Society for Testing & Materials standard reference number.

The two standards are equivalent and you can safely use the supplied product.

In my last flush I used DexCool as well. There have been no heating or cooling issues as a result. As mentioned, it conforms to the specification.
